30TH Annual Gonzaga DC Classic
Abington 58, Gonzaga (Washington D.C.) 51
Plenty is expected out of Abington this season and the Ghosts got things rolling right out of the gate as they knocked off perennial-power Gonzaga 58-51 in the opening round of the 30th Annual Gonzaga DC Classic in Washington D.C.
“It’s the first game of the season, and down here, they started last week, so they already had two games under their belt,” Abington coach Charles Grasty said. “We just wanted our guys to come out and compete. We knew some of their players that were returning from last year. We knew a lot of their big guys that are getting heavily recruited.
“Big-time coaches were here. We just wanted to stay the course and play Abington basketball, make them defend. We got a lot of 50-50 balls and we just played really, really strong.”
The game went back and forth all the way as the Ghosts led by two at the end of the first quarter and by one at halftime before the Eagles grabbed the lead back at 43-42 after three quarters.
From there, though, the Ghosts outscored the hosts, who have won this tournament for the last 13 years, 15-8 to seal the win
“We knew it would be tough, but our guys competed,” Grasty said. “I’m really proud of them.
“Down here, it’s a different brand of basketball. We wanted to let the guys know, come out and play strong from the start and see how they were going to call it. Our guys adjusted, played hard and kept fighting. It was fun. It was fun to watch."
Abington senior Eric Dixon, a Villanova signee, who, despite picking up his third foul early in the third quarter was nearly unstoppable. He poured in a game-high 29 points, snared 13 rebounds and had four assists to go along with a pair of steals.
“Eric picked up his second and third fouls early in the third quarter,” Grasty said. “We needed him to defend, we needed him to rebound. He took a monster charge at the end of the game. It was a five-point game with 1:30 left, and that got our guys really going.
“They called a timeout after that, and one of the things we said, ‘Look how you’re battling, look where you are. Eric was nominated for the McDonald’s All-American game, which is awesome, and we said, ‘Look, if this guy can take charges and dive on the floor and work his butt off, why can’t we.’ The guys did it.”
Lucas Monroe, a University of Pennsylvania commit, was next for the Ghosts with 16 points to go along with five rebounds. Teammate Darius Brown had eight points, five rebounds and two steals.
“Darius Brown had a monster game,” Grasty said. “He had eight points, but he just played really, really well. They have a shot clock down here, and we were up four with about two minutes left in the game. We called a play for him, he went back door and made a great reverse layup, and we went up six. You could kind of see the air go out of their guys."
Maurice Henry also drew the praise of his coach.
“Maurice Henry is a first-year starter,” Grasty said. “He’s probably 5-8 with a lot of soles on his sneakers, and he played super tough. Their point guard was 6-4, their two guard was 6-3, and then they went 6-6, 6-7 and 6-7, and he battled. He fought and boxed out.”
Abington will play Episcopal (Texas) in a semifinal game on Saturday at 5:45 p.m.

“The boys played great team defense and gang rebounded all game,” CR North coach Jesse Krasna said.“They limited GA’s star player, Jordan Longino, to eight points after he had 30 and 28 in his first two games. Josh Fisher drew that defensive assignment and rose to the challenge in a big way.”

Non-league
Plymouth Whitemarsh 66, Norristown 61
As opening nights go, they don’t get much better than the Colonials’ season-opening win over their neighboring rival in front of a sellout crowd in their brand new state-of-the-art gymnasium. Throw in a brilliant 41-point effort by Naheem McLeod, and you have an instant classic.
“It was an amazing experience,” coach Jim Donofrio said. “Rivalries don’t go away – the PW/Norristown rivalry doesn’t go away, I’ll tell you that.
“You add into the mix a brand new gym. They turned 300-400 people away. There might have been about 2,100 people trying to get in there. As a high school basketball fan, it’s just really, really enjoyable to be at a school and a program that could do that. There was unbelievable support from both Norristown and PW. They sold a thousand tickets before two o’clock. It’s quite an arena, it can hold a ton, and it was a good old-fashioned rivalry game.”
Those who made it into the Colonials’ packed house were in for a treat, compliments of McLeod. After scoring six points in the first quarter, the Florida State-bound senior erupted for 17 in a second quarter that saw the Colonials turn a 16-14 deficit into a 34-28 halftime lead.
“We’re brand new in a lot of ways, and we did a lot of rookie things, but the kids know you can’t lose that game – you just can’t,” Donofrio said. “I give them a ton of credit.
“Naheem has been working on playing all facets of the game, and he just knew where to go to be at his best, and that’s a big sign for us because he could have very easily decided he was going to take shots that weren’t his highest percentage.
“He even called me off several times when I called certain plays and said, ‘Nope, get it to me down here,’ and that’s what experienced guys do.”
Norristown outscored the Colonials 21-14 in the third quarter to go on top 49-48. McLeod – who had eight points in the third quarter – scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, but he had plenty of help. Mark Kalala had four points, and Kyree Pendelton and Luke DiCianno each added a basket.
“I give our guys credit for really being so inexperienced in so many ways and yet winning,” Donofrio said. “That’s a big, big plus.
“Luke DiCianno, a sophomore, had a great game, despite my getting over him a number of times, and that’s a big, big sign. We’re happy. We’re a happy, happy bunch. Our guys are very different than what we’re used to. They play to the crowd. Like Chuck Moore said, ‘These guys do not know what they’ve inherited and what it requires,’ but they found out tonight in a big way.
“You’re talking about four kids on the floor that never started a varsity game before, and you have to play it in front of 1,700 people in the oldest rivalry in our area with high, high emotional stakes. It was just a neighborhood knock-down, drag-out, and to win that – that’s quite a compliment.”
Also for the Colonials, DiCianno added 11 points and Caelin Peters had eight.
Norristown was led by the 19-point effort of Nizer Kinney. Aaron Reddish (13 points) and Tyler Lyons (12 points) also finished in double figures.
Plymouth Whitemarsh (1-0) will host Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter in a non-league game Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Cheltenham 50, Central 36
Cheltenham used a balanced attack to net a 50-36 win over Central in the non-league season opener for the Panthers.
Cheltenham built a 33-22 lead at halftime and then expanded its advantage to 44-24 after three quarters by limiting the Lancers to just one field goal in the period.
“Cohesively as a unit defensively, we started to guard the ball and help and recover rather than have two of our players guarding the ball, leaving other offensive players open within their cuts on the other team,” coach Patrick Fleury said. “So we were able to get some steals and get some rebounds, get out into the open floor and be able to convert on some baskets. We were able to keep them from making a run in those quarters.”
Point guard Zahree Harrison led the Panthers’ offense with a team-high 12 points to go along with five assists and four steals. Teammate Brandon Scott contributed 11 points and four steals and Tim Myarick had nine points and eight rebounds. Jalen Mickens added eight points and four steals. Kyin Healey dominated on the boards for Cheltenham by pulling down 10 rebounds. Freshman Justin Moore contributed six points and four steals.
“We’re powered right now by Tim Myarick, Brandon Scott, Jalen Mickens, Zahree Harrison, and Kyin Healy – our first unit, and they came out and were cohesive on the defensive end which led to a lot of easy baskets early on,” Fleury said. “Justin Moore came on and definitely ignited us within that run.”
Cheltenham (1-0) will take on Frankford on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Central – 14-8-2-12 – 36
Cheltenham – 18-15-11-6 – 50

Neshaminy 50, Marple Newtown 48
Damon McGovern, a junior captain, scored 17 points, and junior Kyle Saglimben also finished in double figures with 10 to lead the new-look Redskins to the non-league win.
“We played really well,” coach Mark Tingle said. “We didn’t know what was going to happen with this team because we graduated our top seven seniors that played for us last year.
“Between our sophomores and juniors, they got a ton of experience with a couple of our seniors sprinkled in so it was nice.”
The Redskins took a 12-6 lead into the second quarter only to watch their hosts rally to knot the score 24-24 by halftime. Sparked by five points from both Saglimben and McGovern, the Redskins outscored Marple Newtown 13-10 in the third quarter to go on top 37-34.
“We were up four with around 10 seconds, and one of their players hit a three to cut it to one,” Tingle said. “We were up by eight at one point, but we only shot 6-for-19 from the free throw line as a team.
“At the end, when they fouled us, we were missing the front end of one-and-ones. It was one of those things we kept it close because we weren’t making foul shots.”
The Redskins connected on just 3-of-12 from the foul line in the fourth quarter but still escaped with the win.
In addition to scoring 17 points, McGovern contributed three assists and three rebounds.
“It was a good effort as far as team rebounding,” Tingle said. “We had seven guys that had between three and four rebounds. Collectively, we rebounded well.”
