PENNRIDGE 57, NORTH PENN 43
John Post was a one-man wrecking crew in the first half of Thursday’s regular season finale, scoring 18 of his game-high 25 points by halftime and propelling the visiting Rams to a 31-19 halftime lead. The two teams exchanged baskets in the second half as the Rams notched a win that ensured them a berth as the “wild card” team in this weekend’s SOL Tournament.
“Any time you get to play an extra game, it’s good news,” coach Dean Behrens said. “We’re going to be there, we’re going to do the best we can, we’re going to play hard, and that’s the way it’s going to be.
“I’m not sure I thought we were going to be 17-5 this year. Obviously, we’re disappointed by the way we played CB West (in a pair of losses) this year. We didn’t win the division and they did – congratulations to them. They deserved it, but 17-5 is a heck of a record.”
Making the record even more impressive is the fact that the Rams were 13-2 after a 4-3 start that saw them lose three straight to Neshaminy, Central Bucks South and Conestoga.
In Saturday’s opening round game at Bensalem, the Rams will face SOL American Conference champion Plymouth Whitemarsh. The Colonials are 22-0 and ranked number one in the state.
“One thing we have – we played a tough schedule,” Behrens said. “I told the guys on the bus when we were coming home from Reading (a 55-50 win on Feb. 3) that we were going to play Reading and PW in eight days. Not many teams have done that.
“It’s a great atmosphere. I’m excited to coach at Bensalem – I haven’t been there yet. Since we have a bye (in the District One 6A Tournament), we won’t play again for 10 days, so it’s good for us to play.”
In addition to Post, the Rams received 13 points – which included three 3-pointers – from Jake Pestrack. Point guard Luke Yoder added 10 points and Mike Molettiere had six.
For the Knights, Chris Coleman had 11 points. Three players – Joey Lindsay, AJ Catanzaro and David Robinson – had eight each, and AJ Mitchell chipped in with six.
Pennridge (9-3 SOL) closed out the regular season with a 17-5 record. The Rams are currently the number six seed in the District One 6A power rankings.
“The fact that we’re sixth – I feel as though that’s pretty good, so we’re proud of that.” Behrens said. “It’s something no one can take away from them. They earned it. No one gave them the wins.
“I felt as though sweeping CB East, North Penn and Souderton was big. Obviously, beating Reading at Reading was a huge win. I feel like our schedule was a tough schedule. It’s a credit to the kids. Players win games. They went out and performed.”
North Penn (6-6 SOL) closed out its regular season with a 12-10 record. As of Thursday night, the Knights were the 20th seed in the latest power rankings.
