SOL Patriot Division
Bensalem 50, Council Rock South 48
It wasn’t easy, but Bensalem clinched the SOL Patriot Division title with its close win at CR South on Tuesday.
“Coming into the season, we always have the kids make goals,” said Owls’ coach Ron Morris. “Every single kid, their first goal was the SOL championship. It’s great for the kids to feel all the success of the hard work they put in. We only took off one week last year because we weren’t happy. That’s why we started our unfinished business, and for them to come this far, put all that time in and earn this, it’s great for all the kids to feel the success.”
Tuesday’s game was another in a tough stretch for Bensalem, which is 3-3 in its last six games, including a 64-51 loss to Council Rock North on Saturday.
“It’s always tough to play at Council Rock South,” Morris said. “Coach (Andrew) Rogers is doing a really good job. Their kids play so hard. They battle. They’re in every game. They were playing for their season – they’re trying to make the playoffs. We knew they weren’t going to lay down.
“To win the championship, you have to overcome obstacles. We had a setback on Saturday, and unfortunately, one of our players – his cousin passed away on Sunday. So, we had a team meeting (Monday), and we said, ‘Forget basketball, this is way bigger.’
“They all came together for Jack Wineburg, and the kids really gave everything they had on the floor to make sure he really felt it tonight because we needed to pick him up after him being down after such a tragic loss.”
This game came down to the final seconds, and CR South had a chance to send it into overtime late.
“They bounced back; they fought all the way through to the very end,” Morris said. “We were up two, and we fouled them with two seconds left shooting a layup. Their kid makes the first foul shot, I called a timeout to ice him, and coming out of the timeout, he misses the foul shot to tie the game.
“We got a big rebound by Allen (Myers), and they foul him. He makes one-of-two and gets the offensive rebound, game over.
“It was just an amazing feeling to be able to win a championship again. I can’t talk about these guys enough. Jeremy (Rodriguez) had big buckets, Aaron (Sanders) was awesome. Eric Gonzalez didn’t think he was having a good game, but he had two points, and they were huge in the fourth quarter. In a tie game, he makes a layup.
“Allen (Myers) had huge rebounds. Jack (Wineburg) was a warrior. Antonio Morris was 2-for-2 from the line in the fourth quarter. Matt Ebner came in and gave us big minutes. Jake DeLange was able to come back and played well tonight, Tra Edwards made big foul shots.
“It was just a true team victory all the way through. Our bench was awesome – the energy. We couldn’t win this without our staff. It takes a village. Our staff is awesome. There’s a lot that goes in when you win a championship. It’s way more than me. Everyone just truly bought in. It’s an awesome feeling.
“This win is for all of Bensalem – current students, staff, alumni – everyone who ever walked the hallways of Bensalem High School.”

Neshaminy 49, Council Rock North 40
By the time the district playoffs arrive, the SOL Patriot Division figures to be well-represented and battle tested. Tuesday, it was Neshaminy’s turn to tip the division upside down and did so with a
solid 49-40 win over a CR North team that went into the game red hot.
“It was a good win,” said Neshaminy coach Mark Tingle. “(CR North has) been playing really well. They’ve had big wins over Pennsbury and Bensalem. We knew we were just inside the playoff bubble. We had to get this one.”
Evan Esposito had the big night offensively with 20 points for Neshaminy, 12 of which came in the first quarter, including three 3-pointers.
“Evan Esposito had a monster night,” Tingle said. ”He had 12 in the first quarter, and in general, played a solid game. Overall, we did a good job sharing the ball and making the most of our opportunities.
“(CR North standout Bernie Parent) had 16, but it was a tough 16. Sean Curley did a good job playing him.”

Pennsbury 65, Harry S Truman 37
Twenty-four hours after a last-second loss against Council Rock North, Pennsbury went on the road and handled Pennsbury in a nice bounce-back effort.
“I’m proud of the guys,” said Falcons coach Bill Coleman. “We had a tough loss yesterday at the buzzer. Tonight, they took care of business. The guys defended the way we like to.
“In this case, that’s the great thing about basketball. You get right back into it. We had an hour practice today. It was a traditional, normal practice, accelerated to 60 minutes. We told them, ‘This is the way we have to play from here on out.’”
Evan McNeely had 19 points and seven rebounds to lead the Falcons, while Aidan McCormack had 10 points and seven rebounds.

SOL Colonial Division
Central Bucks East 55, Central Bucks West 41
Needing a win to keep its hopes of a repeat SOL Colonial Division championship alive, the Patriots got just that and did so on Senior Night against their archrival Bucks on Tuesday.
“Tonight was a great night for our seniors and another awesome contribution from our bench,” said CB East coach Erik Henrysen. “West did a nice job in the first half controlling the tempo of the game. We knew we needed a strong third quarter. Credit to West. When we go up 10 in the third quarter, they came right back and cut the lead to four.
“I thought Aidan Weaver made a momentum-killing ‘3’ when West cut the lead to four.”
East then put the game away with a 20-11 fourth quarter.
“The fourth quarter belonged to our second group,” Henrysen said. “Tyriq Toney-Bailey was electric. He has been playing really well. He scored 10 in the fourth and helped us build back a double-digit lead, ultimately killing off the game. When Tyriq plays with a chip on his shoulder, he’s really tough to stop.
“Ryan Lenahan got us going early with a couple tough drives to the basket. His defense was great throughout the game. Joey Giordano was great breaking pressure, as was his on-the-ball defense.
“(Josh) Lyzinski and (Kyle) Berndt didn’t score but were huge defensively and on the glass.
“My favorite part about this team is how much they celebrate one another. They just want to win. We are getting major contributions from someone different every game. It’s usually the guy who is subbed out that is the first out of his seat cheering when his replacement makes a play.”
Toney-Bailey led the team with 14 points, while Brett Young had nine.
On Senior Night, Toney-Bailey, Young, Weaver, Brett Young, Nick Rivera, Lenahan and Lyzinski were honored before the game.
“Coaching Weaver, Cummiskey, Young, Rivera, Tone-Bailey, Lenahan and Lyzisnki has been a gift,” Henrysen said. “Their leadership has been awesome, and we can see their influence trickling down to the younger guys.”
Donte Mancini had 12 to lead West, while John Lee and Mike Fountain scored 10 points each.
CB East (13-7, 9-5 SOL) can clinch at least a share of the division title Thursday at North Penn.

Central Bucks South 75, North Penn 73
On Senior Night, the seniors stepped up for CB South, which remained in a first-place tie with the nailbiter over North Penn on Tuesday.
No senior stepped up bigger than forward Michael Farley, who scored 31 points, 21 in the second half. He was 8-for-10 from the line in the second half and also stuck three 3-pointers.
“Michael Farley was spectacular all night long,” said South coach Jason Campbell. “At one point, I pulled him out and got on him. He responds well and ended up dropping 31. He was real strong getting inside and taking it to the rim. His stroke was there too. He picked good times to shoot the 3-ball and got clean looks. His shot selection was really smart.
“I had to yell at him about defense, to get him to focus on what his assignment was. You can’t lose your focus against North Penn. But he got better. He was a force in there on defense too.”
Free throw shooting was key for the Titans in the second half. Farley was 8-for-10 from the line in the second half. Jay Macalindong was 6-for-6 and scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half as well.
Tyler Meinel had 11 points, while Joe Rooney scored 10, eight in the first half.
Before the game, South’s seven seniors – Farley, Macalindong, Rooney, Jesse Rottuno, Aidan VanZanten, Bryan Delara and Brady Moore were honored.
North Penn was led by junior Ryan Zeltt, who scored 27 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. Ryan Deininger had 17, and Joey Larkins 13.
With the win, CB South is now 9-5 in the SOL, tied with CB East atop the league with one game remaining. The Titans play at Pennridge on Thursday night. North Penn (11-9, 8-6 SOL) hosts CB East.

Pennridge 84, Souderton 74
When Pennridge shoots well, it can play with anybody on its schedule. The Rams showed that a week ago against North Penn, and Tuesday had another big offensive effort in avenging a previous loss to rival Souderton.
“We’re playing better,” said Rams coach Dean Behrens. “We still haven’t put it all together, but for us, it was Senior Night, and I thought that was special. Obviously, 84 points is a lot of points. I can’t explain it. We couldn’t hit the broad sign of a barn on Friday.”
Pennridge led by two after one and at halftime led 36-27. It maintained that lead the rest of the way and out-shot the visiting Indians.
Matt Campione led the way with 29 points and five 3-pointers. Justin McCormick added 20 points, and Jude D’Agostino pumped in 17.
“We missed 10 foul shots, or we could have been flirting with 100,” Behrens said. “It’s an amazing output for us. It’s the same kind of output we had last Tuesday against North Penn. But those kinds of things aren’t consistent. The next game we came out and shot 30 percent. We have not shot well as a team. We shooting 26 percent from ‘3’ and 38 percent overall. But not tonight. Not last Tuesday.
“Obviously, it’s nice to be continuing to play hard. We didn’t have a good enough year to be in the playoff hunt, but I’m pleased with the kids. They’ve stayed engaged.”
Chris Towsen was Souderton’s top scorer with 17 points, while Aleks Smith added 12 and Paul Vince 11.

Abington 62, Plymouth Whitemarsh 59 (2 OT)
Abington knows it needs to win out to secure its spot in the District One Class 6A playoffs. Tuesday, the Galloping Ghosts played like it, outlasting PW for a huge win.
“Every game is a playoff game,” said Ghosts coach Charles Grasty. “That’s what we’ve been telling them. We don’t know if it’s too late or not, but we’re going to go down fighting. I was definitely proud of the guys – they didn’t hang their heads, they didn’t give up.
“Our bench was tremendous tonight. Danny Moynihan is a wonderful teammate. He’s a football guy, but he’s playing with us. He got our bench going, and our guys fed off it. They feed off that energy. He did a great job.”
Abington needed every ounce of that energy Tuesday, as PW led 40-35 heading into the fourth quarter.
“They have the never-give-up attitude,” Grasty said. “We got down, they fought back, they didn’t hang their heads. They just kept plugging.
After Connor Fields fouled out in the fourth quarter, a freshman, Paul Glants, came in and scored five points and dished out a pair of assists.
“Paul Glants gave us some really good minutes,” Grasty said. “He hit a really big basket for us. I asked him to play some defense. He was struggling a little bit. He was a starter early in the year, had some injuries, didn’t get as much playing time as I know he would have liked, but he just kept coming to practice, plugging along. Tonight, we called him, and he made a big basket and had some stops. It was good to see.”
In the second overtime and with the Ghosts trailing by two, Jeremiah Lee gave the Ghosts the lift they needed to pull out the win, burying a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left. The Ghosts came up with a stop on the defensive end, and Fhenyx Scutt calmly sank both ends of a one-and-one with 16 seconds remaining to give the Ghost their final margin of victory.
“Jeremiah Lee kept plugging along,” Grasty said. “Some shots that he normally makes went in and out for him, but he didn’t hang his head and he had a big ‘3’ for us that us up 60-59. They were only down one, but when you’re in overtime and get down one – we were able to lock down when we had the lead.”
Derrius Lucas was the leading scorer for Abington with 21 points and six rebounds. Fields and Lee had 10 points each.
PW was led by Qudire Bennett, who scored 23 points and Marshall Baker, who added 17.
Abington (11-8, 9-5 SOL), unofficially, is sitting just out of the 24-team playoff picture at No. 26, with games remaining against Penn Wood Wednesday, Quakertown Thursday and Hatboro-Horsham on Friday.
PW (14-7, 11-4 SOL) remains in a first-place tie atop of the Liberty Division standings with Upper Dublin and Wissahickon. The Colonials, currently No. 23 in District One, have a big one remaining Thursday at home against Wissahickon.

Upper Dublin 52, Wissahickon 37
Upper Dublin’s win and Plymouth Whitemarsh’s loss to Abington have created a logjam atop the SOL Liberty Division standings, as four teams remain in title contention heading into the final night
of the regular season.
“Losing the game to PW – we had our chances,” said Upper Dublin coach Chris Monahan about Thursday’s 47-44 loss to the Colonials. “We lost in a crazy way. If we win that game, we really had our destiny in our own hands. Losing that game put us in a spot where we need help, and when you need help, you’ve got to take care of your own message, and that was our message. Tonight was a great first step in taking care of our own business.”
Wissahickon entered the night tied with PW for first. Upper Dublin outscored the Trojans 14-5 in the opening quarter to take command. It was 24-16 at halftime.
“We’ve dug ourselves a hole often this year,” Monahan said. “It’s something we’ve been talking about, and we talked about it again before this game. Our defense was really locked in at the beginning, and our offense was clicking. We scored inside, we scored outside early, we scored in transition early, so we were scoring a lot of ways, and we were getting stops.
“DJ Cerisier did a great job on Earl Stout, who is a fantastic scorer. He only had six, and Josh Twersky only had one field goal, and that was late in the fourth quarter. He made an open three, and he had looks. They both had looks, but I thought we did a good job challenging them and making them shoot with a hand in their face, so that was really the story on the defensive end, and we shared the ball.
“I’ve said all year – we have five kids on the floor almost always that can score from a lot of different spots, and we’re good when we’re moving the ball side to side, when we’re sharing the ball, and we did that for large portions of the game.”
Cerisier and Seaton Kukla led the Cardinals with 13 points each, while Colin O’Sullivan added 11.
Wissahickon was led by Morgan Wilson’s 16 points.
Upper Dublin (15-6, 11-4 SOL) can clinch a share of the Liberty Division title with a win at Hatboro-Horsham in its regular-season finale on Thursday. Wissahickon (14-7, 11-4 SOL) plays at PW on Thursday. The winner of that game clinches at least a share of the division title.

Quakertown 44, Hatboro-Horsham 30
Defense hasn’t been the problem for a young Quakertown team this season, and it certainly wasn’t on Tuesday.
The Panthers shut out visiting Hatboro-Horsham in the first quarter and held it to just nine field goals all game on the way to the 14-point win.
“Our defense has really been great all season,” said Quakertown coach Tony Dacosta. “Even against the really strong teams, we’ve played defense well.
“Sometimes, we’ve struggled to score, and we’ve been hurt with offensive rebounds and turnovers, but if we can put those things behind us, maintain our toughness, we can find ourselves on the winning end of some of these games.”
Tuesday, Kyle Rosenberger led a balanced scoring effort with nine points, while Ethan Tomlinson added eight points.
Hatboro-Horsham was led by Noah Schlosser with 11 points and Kyle Dittus with nine.

Springfield Twp 47, Lower Moreland 33
Ben Cooney finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds, and Springfield turned in a stellar defensive effort to shut down rival Lower Moreland on Tuesday.
“We played well early,” said Spartans’ coach Rob Fusaro. “Our defense was really, really good. We tried to take them out of their flow offensively. We guarded their ‘3s’ well, and our gap defense was good. The guys just executed what our game plan was.
“They’re a very well-coached team, they can shoot the ball, they’re very disciplined, so we had to key up the defense and see what we could do against them, try to contain them a little bit, and it worked. We got key rebounds, made key stops, did a solid job defensively, and the offense just executed what we needed to do.
“Ben Cooney was phenomenal – 17 points and 14 rebounds. Defensively, he was calling out their sets. He played the best he has played all year probably. He’s been consistently good the whole year. He’s just been a warrior the whole time for us.”

“It’s been great,” Fusaro said. “The kids have really bought in, stepped in their roles. Our seniors – I tell them all the time – they have bought into everything I’ve asked them to do and more. Everything I ask them to do they do, and the results have worked pretty well so far.
“The whole group – one through 17 that we have on that bench – have all just completely bought in to what we want to do. They’re there for each other. They’re great teammates. It’s a nice push for the program in the right direction.”
