Non-league
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 9, ST. JOE’S PREP 6
The Patriots battled the Hawks to a 3-3 halftime tie and then took control of the game in the second half, outscoring their visitors 6-3 to notch the impressive non-league win.
Thomas Williams had a hand in six goals, scoring three times and assisting on three others to lead the Patriots’ attack. Adam Volm also had a hat trick.
“St. Joe’s Prep is a quality team – they’re well coached and very talented athletes,” East coach Bruce Garcia said. “Our defense tonight stood out along with our goalie (Bennett Snyder), which allowed the offense the time to do their job.
“We are very fortunate to play a team like St. Joe’s.”
Luke Christmas turned a Williams pass into the game’s first goal with 5:13 remaining in the first quarter. The Prep evened the score with 25.2 seconds remaining, but the Patriots had just enough time to score the go-ahead goal with Williams finding the net with 2.5 seconds remaining
The Hawks scored back-to-back goals in a span of just over three minutes to go on top 3-2 with 6:18 remaining in the half. Three minutes later, Chris Funston (Williams assist) evened the score, and that 3-3 score held until halftime.
With five minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Hawks scored to go on top 4-3, but again the Patriots had an answer. Volm’s unassisted goal with 2:46 remaining in the quarter knotted the score, and a goal by Ryan Atkinson
(Christmas assist) just over a minute later sent the Patriots into the final quarter with a 4-3 advantage.
Volm’s unassisted goal with 10:19 remaining put the Patriots on top 5-3. The Hawks trimmed that lead to one with a goal a minute later, but with 5:32 remaining, Williams scored an unassisted goal that sparked a 3-0 East tear in a dazzling three-minute span. Williams assisted on Volm’s third goal of the game and then found the net to complete his hat trick – this one unassisted – to put the Patriots on top 9-5 before the Hawks scored a late goal.
Funston’s six caused turnovers and six ground balls led the Patriots. David Brown had four caused turnovers and two ground balls, Dean Blackwell had three caused turnovers and two ground balls. In addition to scoring three goals, Volm had three ground balls. Patrick Coleman and Zacary Ramey each had three ground balls. Christmas had two caused turnovers and one ground ball. Ryan Atkinson had two ground balls, and Evan Riley had one caused turnover and one ground ball.
