QUAKERTOWN 10, PLEASANT VALLEY 9 (OT)
Scott Keck scored less than a minute into the first overtime period to propel the host Panthers to the dramatic win in Friday’s non-league opener. Gavin Hilleart won the face-off to give the Panthers possession in OT, and Keck did the rest.
“We played real sloppy – I think we had first game jitters, so hopefully, that will be out of our systems,” coach Jeff Royall said.
The Panthers led 6-4 at halftime only to watch their visitors rally to knot the score.
“We started getting some penalties – we were getting slashing calls,” Royall said. “We were just getting a little too confident, and we started beating ourselves. Then we kind of pulled it together at the last minute and started coming back.
“Obviously, we came back and got the win, but they were coming on strong there for a little while. We finally got our ‘D’ together and got it straightened out. I was worried – we don’t need a loss in our very first game. We didn’t get to have a scrimmage because it got cancelled because of the snow.”
Jeff Royall led the Panthers’ attack with three goals and one assist while Keck finished with two goals and two assists.
Coach Royal lauded the play of Keck, Royall and defender Dan Grubb, who led the defense with seven ground balls.
“Those three really stood out today,” the first-year coach said. “They did a very good job. They were real good.”
