DOWNINGTOWN WEST 7, UPPER DUBLIN 6
It looked like it could be a long afternoon when the visiting Whippets opened up a 4-1 lead after one quarter only to watch the Cardinals come roaring back with four second-quarter goals to knot the score 5-5 at halftime.
“We made a couple of stops on defense,” UD coach Pat Lacon said. “Our goalie (Nate Fechtor) made a string of some really nice saves, and that started to build the momentum, so we worked from the back end up to the attack.
“Kids started to get their legs underneath them. It feels like everyone is a freshman because we lost last year. What really is shocking is that the ninth graders – the last time they played was in seventh grade. We have a few kids who have seen above average varsity time, but 90 percent of the kids are finding their own way, and that’s part of the journey. We focus on the journey a lot with the kids. Whether today is a good day or bad day, it’s going to help us for what’s to come in the future.”
Stevie Pileggi scored UD’s only goal of the opening quarter. In the second quarter comeback, Andrew Sowers had a pair of goals, Pileggi and Vijay Foster both had one goal.
The Whippets broke the tie with a pair of third-quarter goals. Brett Rama’s goal with two minutes remaining in the fourth period pulled the Cardinals to within one.
“That’s when it got really exciting because there were some nice turnovers to allow us to tie it up,” Lacon said.
Lacon had high praise for his defense, lauding the efforts of his four poles – Sam Morganstein, Seth Miller, Patrick Tucker and Jake Rossman.
Fechtor recorded 12 saves in a stellar outing.
The season has had its challenges for Lacon and his squad.
“My wife just had a baby, so I was out a few days,” the UD coach said. “We lost a player for three weeks to COVID who just returned today, and we had some coaching challenges with teachers scheduled for COVID shots.”
