Continental Conference
Central Bucks South, 9, North Penn 8 (2 OT)
With less than two minutes showing on the game clock and the Titans trailing by two goals, Mike Strayline's head coaching debut with Central Bucks South appeared as if it would be ending in disappointment.
A North Penn timeout in the final moments of regulation allowed Strayline to huddle with his team and discuss what they would do next. Whatever he said during the break in action appeared to work, as the Titans scored twice to force overtime before eventually beating host North Penn in double overtime in the conference opener for both squads.
"Momentum was big,” Strayine said. “We were down, they called timeout and we had an opportunity to talk about what we wanted to do.
"We doubled the ball, got it back, scored to get to within one, and then scored again and the momentum was in our favor a lot. My guys were fired up. Once overtime came, it was just a matter of us getting that next possession and being able to put one more home."
Dante Poli got the Titans (1-0, 1-0) to within one goal and then Evan Falkowski tied things up at the end of regulation before junior Ian Vogt was able to bury the game-winner.
Poli led the way with four goals and two groundballs for CB South, while Falkowski scored three times, assisted once and tallied three groundballs. Vogt scored twice, while Mike Dutkiewicz and Justin Abbonizio recorded one assist apiece. Jake Lautt tallied three groundballs and four draw controls.
"Our seniors stepped up big time at the end of regulation by helping to control the tempo and getting us back into it with those goals," Strayline said. "Ian picked up a garbage goal in the crease after getting possession and staying calm before finishing it."
The season-opening win is a step in the right direction for CB South, but Strayline pointed out that his team is still slightly behind where they were last year as far as depth is concerned.
"We're building upon our roster now with a lot of younger guys who are stepping up and getting good experience right now," the Titans’ first-year coach said. "We were very resilient today against a great lacrosse team in North Penn. Rick Smith has done a great job with that program, but we held on and made a couple of really good plays at the end and it got us out of there with the win."
Central Bucks South will host Hatboro-Horsham on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. North Penn will travel to Great Valley for a non-league contest on Tuesday.
