AVON GROVE 16, ABINGTON 4
The Ghosts trailed by just one after one quarter (2-1) but found themselves on the short end of a 7-2 score at halftime.
Things got a whole lot tougher for the Ghosts when they lost starting LSM Liam Penderghest to a pulled hamstring at the start of the second quarter.
“That was a big difference maker,” Abington coach Mike Duffy said. “He’s great in the transition game, really good in the ground ball game.
“We were really running with them well in that first quarter, and then Liam Pendy went down, and it was a skid from there.”
Matt Miller’s three-goal, one-assist effort led the Ghosts. Colin Sullivan added one goal while Bobby Zuccato and Woll each had an assist.
Despite the outcome, Duffy liked his team’s effort.
“I think we’re getting better,” the Ghosts’ coach said. “This year I chose to ramp up the competition we’re playing to let them see the game played at that higher level and the speed it has to be played at.
“I think we’re getting better. We played some really good teams up until now, and coming into the back half of our schedule, we’re hoping it pays off, and that speed translates.
“They had a lot of really good shooters. We were on their hands, and they still found the back of the net. They were placing their shots really well, and that’s tough to beat.”
Abington (1-8, 1-1 SOL) will host Holy Ghost Prep in a non-league game on Monday.
