NORTH PENN 6, PENNRIDGE 5 (OT)
Danny Payne came through when it mattered most for the Knights, scoring the tying goal late in regulation and then winning it midway through the first overtime with a replay of his game-tying goal.
“When he scored the tying goal, it was snowing, and it was snowing good – it was coming down pretty heavy, and it was actually difficult to see the ball,” North Penn coach Rick Smith said. “It was just an experience.”
Payne’s late-game heroics seemed unlikely after the Rams opened up a 4-1 halftime lead and upped that to 5-1 early in the third quarter.
“We’ve seen Pennridge play, and Pennridge has been doing very, very well recently with their transition game,” Smith said. “We emphasized during practice – if we played Pennridge in transition, we would not win the game.
“In the first half, we made mistakes, they played transition and they won. They really dominated the first half.”
The Knights closed out regulation with a 4-0 tear that was capped with Payne’s equalizer.
“We made a couple of adjustments at halftime with our face-offs, we made a couple of adjustments with our riding, and we came out in the second half and Pennridge scored,” Smith said. “Now we’re down 5-1, and our kids – they never thought it was over, and they went into the third quarter and we just scored one after another.
“It was a team win tonight. Pennridge fought hard, North Penn fought hard. Unfortunately, one of those two teams had to lose. It was a great high school lacrosse game, a typical Suburban One League game. There is no easy game for us in the Suburban One. Everyone is a legitimate team, and it showed tonight. We went neck in neck. It was a great game.”
The Knights’ defense – goalie Bryon Rimmer and defensemen Ryan Schoppe, Sam Bardzinski, Brian Myers and long stick middie Nic Conroy – came up big throughout the entire game and had a stand late in regulation.
“We had the ball on offense, and we threw it away,” Smith said. “Pennridge had an opportunity. They used a timeout, our defense stood its ground and forced overtime.
“Pennridge won the face-off, they used a timeout, and our defense stood tall. We got the ball down on offense, it was Danny Payne on the dodge for the game winner and that was it.”
Rimmer was credited with seven saves.
“Bryon Rimmer did an outstanding job in the second half,” Smith said.
In addition to Payne, Matt Dickson had two goals and two assists in a four-point night. Stephen Rinck also added a pair of goals. Lucas Yannul chipped in an assist.
For the Rams, Nick Fanelli scored two goals and added an assist. The junior attackman reached a personal milestone, connecting for his 100th career goal. Kevin Britner added a pair of goals while Matt Nevells had a goal and an assist.
Pennridge goalie Tristan Banks recorded eight saves.
This game, according to Smith, is one of the special ones.
“You can throw records out the window when we play Pennridge,” Smith said. “Right now we’re both very successful with our records, but anytime we play Pennridge, it’s a battle.
“It’s always a tight game, we always play each other really tough. Our teams are very similar. We’re both very young with very few seniors. We’re junior driven.”
