PENNRIDGE 9, BOYERTOWN 8
The Rams knocked the Bears from the ranks of the undefeated and in the process served notice that they are a force to contend with, winning for the eighth time in nine games.
Boyertown entered Monday’s game ranked second only to Wissahickon in the latest District 1 3A power rankings. The Bears remained in second place while Pennridge is fourth in the latest rankings.
“They’re a really good team as shown by their ranking,” Pennridge coach Chris Pianko said. “We were up almost the whole game. We came off to a good start and scored the first two goals, and they pulled back in. It was just back and forth the whole game.
“We pulled away a little bit at the end where it was 9-7 with around seven minutes left in the game. They got a nice transition goal to bring it within one. Ben Souder, at the faceoff X, got us a good possession, and we were able to kill the rest of the clock to take home the win.”
The Bears made it a 9-8 game with just under three minutes remaining.
“While we were trying to stall out the clock, they got a couple of penalties,” Pianko said. “So when they did get the ball back, they were man down.”
Matt Kriney had a big night for the Rams, leading the way with four goals and one assist.
“Matt Kriney had a huge game as he has a lot for us this year,” Pianko said.
Frank Fanelli added two goals while Rocco Fanelli had a goal and an assist. Matt Seiler and Levi Souder each added a goal. Adding one assist each were Ryan Carickhoff, Drew Ferguson and Cooper States.
Ben Souder won 7 of 13 faceoffs.
On the defensive end, Tyler Vandermark turned in a dazzling 23-save effort in goal.
“Tyler stood on his head – he had an amazing game,” Pianko said. “He was out with an injury for a little while. He got hurt in the first half of our second game of the year against Methacton and was concerned that it was a season-ending injury. After the MRI came back, it was just a sprain and a hyperextension of the knee. Now that he’s come back, he’s done an amazing job for us.
“Our defense did a great job in front of him – Andrew Horensky, Colin Manville, Liam Molyneux and Aiden George with Chase Clontz filling in on a couple of occasions as well. As we’d seen with a lot of Boyertown’s scores, they’ve got a lot of kids who can shoot the ball and a lot of kids who can score goals. I think our defense played exceptionally well and really stood up for the test.”
According to their coach, there’s no big secret to the Rams’ strong start this season.
“I think it’s living into what we’ve done for the last few years,” Pianko said. “We had a very young team last year, so the majority of the kids that are playing for us this year are either two- or three-year starters, so getting a little older, a little more mature, being able to have a full offseason as a head coach and making sure we’re installing what we want through the offseason got us off to a good start this year.
“The biggest piece of it is back to those players. They’ve all grown up and gotten their composure, gotten their confidence and are starting to get on a little roll here.”
