Overtime was the order of the day in SOL boys’ lacrosse
In Wednesday’s battle of SOL powers, Adam Volm scored the game-winner in overtime, propelling the Patriots to the dramatic non-league win.
The game featured a whole lot more defense than offense, and after the Flying Cardinals opened up a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, the Patriots kept them off the board for the next two. East evened the score 2-2 by halftime and took a 3-2 lead into the final quarter that saw the visiting Cardinals rally to knot the score.
Also, for the Patriots, Nick Knepp had a pair of goals while Thomas Williams and Adrian Widdows each had one goal. Matt Bowen and Pat Coleman both contributed an assist.
Nil Updale won 6 of 12 faceoffs. Dean Blackwell (3 caused turnovers), Brennan Coleman (1 assist, 4 caused turnovers, 2 ground balls), Ethan Greenlea (2 caused turnovers, 2 ground balls) and Chris Funston (3 caused turnovers, 3 ground balls) all made important contributions.
Ethan Bean recorded nine saves between the pipes in a winning effort in goal for the Patriots.
