CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 10, HOLY GHOST PREP 9 (OT)
Mike Dutkiewicz scored the game winner in overtime, propelling the visiting Titans to the dramatic win. Coach Mike Strayline, for one, was not the least bit surprised to see the game decided in OT.
“This is the third time I’ve been involved in an overtime game with Holy Ghost Prep in the eight years I’ve been there,” said the Titans’ coach, whose team needed a late goal to extend the game to overtime. “I think the big part was they never lost control – they played a really physical team, and they played lacrosse. They didn’t try to out-muscle them.
“In years past, we’ve had teams where we would get down like that and then we’d try to outmuscle somebody, but we didn’t. We played focused, we stayed in control, and the kids really did a good job of that, and that’s why we won.”
The Titans, who led 2-1 after one quarter, took a 4-3 lead into halftime, but the Firebirds came out of halftime and outscored their visitors 5-3 in the third quarter.
“They’re a very physical team,” Strayline said. “They played us tough up and down the field. They got a couple of quick transition goals and they took a lead.”
Dan Mignogna scored the equalizer with less than a minute remaining in regulation.
“We had another possession and a man up, and we had a chance to win it at the very end, but we had to go to overtime,” Strayline said. “We lost the face-off in overtime, and they had possession.
“We had a good stop – Brad Ross made a great save, and we got it to the offensive zone. Once we got it in the offensive zone, we were able to capitalize.”
Ross had a huge game in goal for the Titans, finishing with 18 saves and two ground balls.
“He had an absolutely amazing night,” Strayline said. “If we didn’t have Brad in the net, it would have easily been a really ugly game.
“The past couple of games – he made 14 saves against Hatboro, and tonight he had 18. When you know you have a guy in the net that’s going to make saves for you, you can gamble a little bit. We had to gamble at the end to try and get the ball back because we were down 9-8.”
Dante Poli also had a big night for the Titans with two goals and five assists. He also had a team-high four ground balls. Ian Vogt added two goals, one assist and three ground balls, and Austin Novick had a pair of goals. Scoring one goal each were Justin Abbonizo and Dylan Grosso. In addition to scoring the tying goal, Mignogna also had three ground balls. Dutkiewicz had three ground balls, and Joe Gannon had two. The Titans were 8-for-24 at the X. Gannon was 6-for-9, and Mark Lumb was 2-for-11.
