SOUDERTON 7, PENNRIDGE 5
In a non-league battle between the neighboring rivals, it was the Indians breaking a 4-4 tie with three goals in the final period.
Coach Mark Princehorn didn't have to look far to find the game changers.
"The key to that was our seniors – specifically, Jake Phaup and Trent Breneman," the Indians' coach said. "You have Jake Phaup winning every single face-off – he went 15-for-16 on the night, which is why he's going to Syracuse.
"He got possessions for us, and Trent Breneman stepped up and capitalized on those possessions with three goals, one of those being the game-tying goal and the other being the eventual game winner.
"Those two seniors have been through a lot for this program. Those two seniors have started every varsity game of their careers, and they've taken the butt kickings, they've taken the heartbreak, and they've taken the bad times, and those two are the faces and the hearts and the souls of this program. They're the two best players ever to come play lacrosse at Souderton, and they both shined last night. Those two helped us specifically get the win."
The Indians led 3-2 at halftime only to watch their visitors even the score at the end of three periods, setting the stage for the Indians' strong finish.
There was no mistaking the significance of the win.
"This was huge," Princehorn said. "The last time we beat those guys dating back to April of 2015 – April 28, 2015, to be exact.
"Now that they're not league, we only get them one time a year, so it makes it that much sweeter and that much more of a challenge. Throw records out the window, throw grade out the window, throw experience out the window. In that rivalry, you know it's going to be a two-goal game. Luckily, our players came and they didn't give up. Our kids have really shined through adversity and have been really resillient so far this season, and we hope to continue that trend. We're not satisifed. We want to be playing our best lacrosse in May."
Breneman led the attack with three goals and one assist. Cole Witoslawski added a pair of goals while Stephen Blue and Walker Martin each had one goal for the Indians.
Chris Warner scored a pair of goals for the Rams, and Nick Fanelli added a goal and an assist. PJ Matkowski and Matthew Nevells both had one goal.
Souderton goalie Axell Beskar recorded seven saves in a winning effort while Pennridge goalie Tristan Banks was credited with nine saves.
