NORTH PENN 7, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 6
Games don’t get much more even than this one. The two teams were deadlocked at two after one quarter and tied 3-3 at the half. It was a 4-4 game heading into the final quarter when the Knights edged their visitors 3-2.
“We had so much internal adversity that my team fought through,” North Penn coach Rick Smith said. “To prevail at the end of the game – I had a player (Andrew Alexander) who was sick at halftime, and he comes out in the fourth quarter, and he gets the ground ball that wins the game.
“My coaching staff was saying, ‘He’s done, he’s out for the game,’ and the next thing you know he said, ‘I’m good. I’m ready to go.’ He got in with about a minute left and caused a turnover, got the ground ball and got it to our offense.
“It was a hard fought game for both teams. I was down a couple players because of some injuries, and I knew that it was going to be a battle to the end. You can throw records out the window – every time CB West and North Penn play it’s a hard fought game, as it should be.”
Keeping the Knights in the game was Matt Rinck. The senior goalie was a difference maker, turning away 24 of 30 shots he faced in a stellar outing.
“He some unbelievable saves today,” Smith said. “He had some saves where he was on his knees and he reached up in the air. He did a great job.”
On the offensive side of the field, Reece Udinski played a direct role in six of his team’s seven goals, scoring two and assisting on four others.
“Reece Udinski did a great job anchoring the offense,” Smith said.
Lucas Yannul added two goals, including a goal that gave the Knights an 7-5 lead with 8:30 remaining in regulation and turned out to be the game winner.
“He’s an attackman that comes off the bench when we run Reece up at midfield,” said Smith, whose team trailed 2-0 early in the contest. “He scored two goals in the fourth quarter, and we win by one.”
The Bucks made things very interesting when Brandon Gervais scored with 5:53 remaining to make it a 7-6 game.
“Matt literally stood on his head – he had two saves late in the fourth quarter,” Smith said. “He was on fire today. He did a really good job for us.
“Even last year – he did really well against CB West last year.”
Rinck had 21 saves in North Penn’s 10-5 win last year.
Also contributing to the Knights’ attack were Tanner Nelson, Matt Dickson and Nick Keim with one goal each. Adding one assist were both Nic Conroy and Eric Diamond.
“It was literally just a whole team effort,” Smith said. “It was a roller coaster of emotions the whole game. It was an intense game, and luckily for us at the end, we had one more goal than CB West did.”
Interestingly, North Penn was ranked 10th and Central Bucks West 11th in District One’s first power rankings released on Sunday.
“To say we’re one goal different is exactly where we should be,” Smith said. “I’m always emphasizing to our guys – win that one ground ball because if you win that one ground ball, that could be the difference in the game, and that’s what happened at the end of the game.”
Gervais and Joey Rockovich led the Bucks with two goals each. Rockovich also had an assist. Mike Samson and Ben Sexauer each added a goal.
Garrett Hichens won 8-of-16 face-offs and had five ground balls. Nick Werner scooped up four ground balls.

West goalie Max Dunar was credited with six saves.
