Souderton 12, Lansdale Catholic 6
The Indians have been on a roll but knew they were in for an emotional night on Monday.
Mark Princehorn, who led Souderton from 2014-19, was back on the sidelines only this time as an opponent. The first-year Lansdale Catholic coach got a nice round of applause from Souderton’s fans and plenty of former and current players made sure to give their regards once the game concluded.
In between, Souderton made sure it wasn’t a homecoming to celebrate as they took over in the second half to win a fifth straight game.
“This was a big game and we needed four quarters of 110 percent lacrosse the entire time,” Souderton senior Manny Puente said. “We carried that mindset the past week, it showed in the past few games and it translated into this game tonight.”
Puente, a long-stick defensive midfielder, and the rest of the Indians defense played a key role in the win by holding LC to just two goals in the second half. Freshman goalie Matt Malanga was solid, making 11 saves and the defenders in front of him kept LC’s top scorers well covered all game.
After falling behind 2-0, the hosts scored three straight to end the first quarter and traded goals with the visitors in the second quarter to cling to a 5-4 advantage at intermission.
A 5-1 advantage in the third quarter helped Souderton open up its lead as the Indians battled for every loose ball and made the task of getting up the field difficult for the visitors.
Souderton controlled possession, thanks in large part to senior Luke Wawrzynek who went 17-of-21 on the faceoff X.
“He’s having an amazing year,” Puente said. “He’s been killing it and he’s shown so much growth as a player. We knew going in we were going to do really well on the faceoffs. We ran by him how to take faceoffs against a guy using a pole and he did it flawlessly.”
John Martin Vince led Souderton with three goals and two assists but the Indians had plenty of contributors. Kobi Bui and Justin Wawrzynek each scored and assisted on two goals while Tyson Bui and Ty Quintois each put away a pair of goals while assisting one.
Jamison McDivitt assisted three goals before putting one away and Seth Grossman added an assist.
“We feel very confident, we’ve been working all season preparing for big games like this,” McDivitt said. “We’ve taught matchups, we’ve talked games, we have a bunch of young players on this roster that play significant minutes so it’s great to get them out here where they’re all learning and all growing.”
For the Crusaders, Connor Mann scored four goals, including the 100th goal of his career. Pat McKeever added a goal and three assists, and Colin Corbett rounded out the scoring with a goal. Connor Flanegan was credited with 10 saves in goal for LC.
Souderton (12-5, 5-5 SOL) will visit Methacton at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
