District 1 4A third place
#4 CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 2, #6 GREAT VALLEY 0
With Friday’s win, Central Bucks South completed their best season ever in districts, finishing in third place. After the heartbreaking loss in the district semifinals to Conestoga in the final 20 seconds, CB South bounced back with a 2-0 win over visiting Great Valley.
Anthony Bice and Jackson Tait each scored a first-half goal.
By the Numbers:
First Half
Anthony Bice (CBS)
Jackson Tait (CBS) from Andrew Sherstynov
Second Half
No Scoring
COACH ED BRNARDIC: “The word of the day was ‘Uncharacteristic.’ Thankfully, we had some great individual performances to help us get the win.
“I hope we never play the day after Halloween again since it looked like we were suffering from a Candy Coma. We were flat. We were slow to react. We were slow to join the rush. It looked like we were stuck in mud. It didn’t help that the wind was so strong, which made it difficult to anticipate where balls would go, and playing diagonal to one side of the field (into the wind) was nearly impossible. But I’m so happy for our gentlemen to have clinched third place in the district, and I’m excited that they reached their goal to play in the state tournament starting on Tuesday.
THE GOALS: “In the opening minutes, Josh Dozier won a head ball in the midfield and directed it towards Tyler Jaskelewicz. TJ knocked the ball to Anthony Bice on the wing and Bice drove towards the goal, turning his defender inside out. Anthony had a chance to shoot on goal himself, albeit from a difficult angle – instead he had his head up and saw Evan Jaskelewicz on the far side for a tap in. Anthony unselfishly played the ball over to Evan, but the Great Valley defender slid in and made a great save to deny the opportunity. The ball however bounced back to Bice who fired the ball into the goal. Somehow these fortunate bounces seem to favor those players who are unselfish, and it was great that Anthony tried to make the unselfish play but was still rewarded with the goal.
“The second goal was from Jackson Tait. Jackson received a pass from Andrew Sherstynov and dribbled into the middle, beating several defenders before sliding the ball past the goalkeeper.”
PROPS:
—FOR JACKSON TAIT: “Jackson had a heck of a game today. Jackson is one of only two sophomores on the team (Tyler Jaskelewicz the other), and in the first half, he decided to take his man on 1v1 on the wing,
and he scored an unbelievable goal. I need to check, but this has to be a candidate for one of the best individual goals of the season for us this year. Jackson was wide with his body open to the attack when he received a ball from Andrew Sherstynov. His first touch was perfect, driving forward to leave the defender behind him, and he went right for the heart of the Great Valley defense. A smooth stepover threw the center back to the other side, and then he fired a left foot shot into the goal against the charging goalkeeper. Tait almost had a brace today when a long distance shot in the second half was just deflected by a diving save that re-directed it off the bar.”
—FOR RYAN KEALY: “One of the main reasons for our success this season is our depth. We are fortunate this year that we have a lot of talent available to us. But as we get closer towards the end of the season, we shorten our bench so that we don’t disrupt the chemistry on the field. Ryan Kealy is one of those players who would be starting on so many other high school teams, but it has been tougher to find him time on our squad. But Ryan is one of my favorite players and is just as important to our success. He comes ready to play, he always has a smile on his face, and he’s one of
the smartest players we have. Whenever I ask probing questions, Ryan always has the right answer. Today we had several injuries, and we called on Ryan to come on in the second half and he was up and down the field, running back to defend the Great Valley attackers and then seconds later joining our attack.
—FOR NATE MONSER: “In a day when we were flat and needed some energy, we leaned on Nate Monser. Nate made a few plays in the first half but was even more impressive in the second half. He was creating several chances with his effort, and he was playing with his head up to find his teammates highlighted by a glorious chance when he dropped the ball back to AJ Okoniewski for a shot on goal.”
