COACH ED BRNARDIC:
“I gave our boys credit for coming in loose after an overtime loss at North Penn earlier in the week. It was especially important given that we were playing a CB West team that has such a great midfield and is solid in the back and in goal. They are talented, disciplined, and well-coached. We talked all week about needing to be patient in our buildup if we wanted to create quality scoring chances.”
–The goals: “South opened the scoring on a volley from the top of the box from Anthony Bice (assist by Josh Dozier). The score remained 1-0 until the second half when Brennan Franklin jumped on a loose ball and sent Anthony Bice through, and he scored near side to open up a two-goal lead. The third goal was a beautiful play that started with Myroslav Lepuha taking his man 1v1 on the wing while Jackson Tait made an underlapping run. Myroslav found Jackson on the top of the box, and he ripped a beautiful shot into the far corner. AJ Okoniewski scored the final goal of the game on a pass from Chase Sauder.”
PROPS:
–For Anthony Bice: “Again. And Again. Anthony delivers and does it in so many different ways. The first one today was a new one – he patiently volleyed a bouncing pass which was headed down from Josh Dozier into the far side of the goal with such beautiful technique. The second one was when he ran in on a through ball from Brennan Franklin and beat the keeper 1v1 on the short side. Anthony is our leading scorer and likely one of the leading scorers in the league, but what’s most impressive about that stat is that every one of his goals have come when the score was within one goal. Once we are up by two goals, we take him off the field to give him rest. There have been many times that I wanted to keep him on the field to get a hat trick, but he demonstrates why we named him as one of our team captains by understanding those are the times to share minutes with his younger teammates.”
–For Pat Vanluvanee: “The final score today doesn’t represent what almost was. It was a 1-0 game when, in a quick moment, we lost our patience on defense and went for a tackle instead of containing our man, which let a CB West attacker to go in alone on our goal. Pat came out and made an incredible diving save. Had West scored on this play they would have tied the game and taken away all of our momentum – it would have been a completely different game. Instead, Pat makes the save and gives us a chance to keep control. The guy is unbelievable. He never, not once, blames any of his teammates when they make mistakes, he just goes out and makes the play when we need him to. The highest character of anyone I’ve ever coached. And his footwork is critical to how we play as a team – so clean, and such smart decisions with the ball playing out of the back – It’s like we have another player on the field.
–For AJ Okoniewski: “Right from the opening whistle, we could see AJ was on today. His movement was smart, his touch was clean, and his every possession was dangerous. There was 15 minutes left in the game, and even though Anthony Bice scored two great goals and Pat VanLuvanee made the save of the game at a critical juncture, I turned to Coach Anthony Ditri and said, ‘AJ has to be our Man of the Match.’ It was just a few seconds later that AJ received a pass from Chase Sauder and scored a beauty from 25 yards out”
