Non-league
NESHAMINY 3, NEW HOPE-SOLEBURY 2 (OT)
Seven minutes into the first overtime, Richie Faul turned a pass from JoeJoe Maxwell into a goal that propelled the Redskins to a hard-fought non-league win over the pesky Lions.
“JoeJoe Maxwell broke down the right side, got to the end line and served it back in – hit Richie Faul for a tap-in to win it into the first overtime,” Neshaminy coach Tom Foley said. “We made life a little more difficult than we needed to.
“It’s kind of the same start we had last year. We outshot them 26-6 – we hit the crossbar three times, we missed a PK. With any luck, we score five goals today, and we’re not in overtime. I was happy that we played better offensively in the second half. I’d like us to button up our defense a little bit. We’re letting too many guys run free in the midfield, so hopefully, we made that adjustment.
“Overall, the second half we did a much better job after – for lack of a better word – a poor first half as far as soccer goes. Once we settled down, we got to goal at will, but we’ve got to realize there’s more than one aspect of the game. We can’t all play offense all the time. We just gave them too much space.”
The Redskins found themselves on the short end of a 1-0 halftime score.
“We had most of the play in the first half, but we continued our trend – we got a PK in the first half, and we missed,” Foley said. “With 10 minutes left in the first half, they got a PK and Jake Hausner scored.
“I thought we played a real shoddy first half – we just kicked the ball over the top and tried to run onto it on a real hot day. We talked about what we like to do – we want to play the ball to the forwards, get the ball wide. We started playing a lot more possession-type soccer and created even more chances.”
The Redskins reaped the dividends when – 10 minutes into the second half – Matt Lamb scored the equalizer.
“He beat their goalkeeper – who had a great game – short side,” Foley said. “Five minutes later, Jose Rivera broke in on the goalkeeper and he scored to make it 2-1.”
Eight minutes later, the Lions drew a corner and capitalized.
“Poor marking on our part, and Hausner headed one in off the corner,” Foley said of a goal that knotted the score in regulation.
Seven minutes later, Faul brought a dramatic end to the contest.
Foley credited the efforts of several players.
“Connor Steele did a great job in the midfield, and Richie (Faul) played really hard – they played the full 87 minutes, and they did a nice job,” the Redskins’ coach said. “Vince DeMaria came off the bench and created some opportunities for us. Evan O’Neil played pretty well in the back. He won a lot of balls and prevented them from getting a goal. It was hot, and it was nice to get out of there with a victory.
“We didn’t play our best defensive game by a long shot, but we certainly played a lot better on the offensive side in the second half. We have to keep building on the positives. We’ll clean up our defense as we go.”
Neshaminy (1-1, 0-1 SOL) will host Pennsbury on Tuesday, and New Hope-Solebury (0-3, 0-1) will host Lower Moreland on Tuesday.

CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 3, PALISADES 0
The Patriots travelled to Palisades for a non-league contest and came away with the shutout win.
“It was a hard-fought game all around,” East coach Josh Isaacsohn said. “(Coach) Cooper Moyer had his team prepared defensively, and they had some strong chances on goal in both halves. We played a well-rounded game, and it was a great all-around win.”
A goal by Brandon Epstein with a Drew Owen assist 10 minutes into the game spotted the Patriots a 1-0 lead, which they took into halftime. Six minutes into the second half, Cole Hedden scored off a Nick Knepp assist, and the Patriots put the finishing touches on the win when Joey Roth scored off a Luke Christmas assist.”
Isaacsohn credited the efforts of his goal scorers as well as Michael Frye and Toby Senior at defensive mid.
Central Bucks East (1-1-1, 0-0-1 SOL) will be on the road at Souderton on Tuesday.
