Council Rock North 1, Council Rock South 0
It’s always a battle when the neighboring rivals meet, and Saturday was no exception. Throw in the fact that it was a special day pitting the two schools against each other in almost all the fall sports, and emotions ran even higher.
“The environment was great tonight,” Rock South assistant coach Zach Orenstein said. “Just about all of the fall
sports had their North/South matchup today with the Legacy Cup, so there were a ton of students, families, and community members on campus.
“Thank you to the athletic office for their effort today to make this happen. The match had that playoff atmosphere that makes high school sports so special. The result wasn’t what we wanted, but there were definitely lessons learned today that will help us in the back half of our season.”
Rock North’s Ben Purcaro scored the game’s only goal early in the opening half with an assist from David Morais, and the rest of the game belonged to the respective defenses.
Scoring Summary
First half –
Ben Purcaro from David Morais (CRN) 12th minute
Second half –
No score
Council Rock assistant coach Brian Hoffman:
–The goal: “We transitioned out of the back after winning a ball. David Moraise played a diagonal ball in between the center back and outside back, and Ben Pucaro, our outside winger, ran onto it perfectly, dribbled into the box and shot far post and beat the goalkeeper.”
–The game: “I feel like whenever we play North and South – because it’s a rivalry game – I feel like South plays better than their potential. They played really physical, hard nosed, but I feel like we were the
more skilled team. It seemed like they shifted their formation to play basically just over the top because I feel like they were trying to skip our midfield because when they tried to play through our midfield – I feel like our fitness this year is one of our strengths, and we were able to stymie them every time they came through the middle.”
–Props: “Our goal scorer in Pucaro has pretty much dominated whatever sideline we put him on all season long, and you saw it really pay off today.
“Both of our outside backs – Jude Reynolds and Gavin Brizuela – played well. South has a very talented player, number 33, and they switched him from one side to the other, and our outside backs got stress, and I feel like they held up really well given the talent of the player they were facing.”
Council Rock South assistant coach Zach Orenstein:
–The game: “It was a tough loss tonight against our district rival. I thought it was a competitive match and what you’d expect from a North/South game. It’s always emotional and passionate when we play each other.
“North did a good job with their physicality and winning the 50/50 ball. I thought we responded well after half time and generated some pressure but couldn’t get that final touch to equalize. I can’t help but be proud of our guys for their effort.”
