Girls
Non-league
PENNSBURY 69, CONWELL-EGAN 47
Ava Sciolla was all but unstoppable in Monday’s non-league game, torching the Eagles for 33 points – including four 3-pointers. Sciolla set the tone for a big day with an 11-point first quarter that included a pair of 3s as well as a conventional three-point play. By halftime, Sciolla had 19 points, and the Falcons led 29-20. A 17-9 third quarter all but put the game out of reach.
The neighboring schools, according to Pennsbury coach Frank Sciolla, have a strong connection.
“Big thanks to Conwell-Egan for switching what would have get a home game for next Saturday to a game at our place today,” Sciolla said. “It’s unusual to play a team twice in a non-league season, but circumstances dictated that we would have to. But there are so many connections between the two teams.
“CEC head coach Chris Brennan coached Ava in CYO basketball at Holy Family. Several girls from both teams play for Philly Heat North. They are coached by Mike McFadden, and his twin daughters play for CEC. Throughout the offseason, Coach McFadden opens up the gym at Holy Family and runs workouts and allows girls from both schools to come and play. This creates a high level of camaraderie and really gets girls an opportunity to have fun and develop.
“It’s cool to see them all playing and succeeding. Egan is poised to make the state playoffs out of the Catholic League and they’re playing with all underclassmen.”
In addition to Sciolla, Sofia Vitucci added nine points while Daniella MacDonald and Nevaeh Dash both had eight.
“Sofia Vitucci had her second straight good game where she played with her head up, and she once again had seven assists,” Sciolla said. “It really makes her tough because you can’t sell out on her when she’s driving.
“Ava started out strong from the perimeter and did a nice job attacking in the second half. Layla Matthias pulled down six rebounds, and Nevaeh Dash did a very good job attacking the rim. I liked what I saw from Liv Gilchrist today. We are only asking her to do one thing and she understands it.
“It’s time to turn our attention to the SOL as (Tuesday) night we start the CB run with a big game against a red hot CB South team.”
Pennsbury (11-1, 6-1 SOL) will host Central Bucks South on Tuesday.
