NORTH PENN 55, LANSDALE CATHOLIC 52
As LC’s desperation shot for the tie clanged off the rim at the buzzer, the Knights celebrated a much-needed win The Knights – who trailed by nine early in the fourth quarter – had just rallied for a dramatic win over their neighboring rival, a win that snapped a three-game skid.
“I was extremely excited,” sophomore point guard Alli Lindsay said. “The bench was in it, my team was in it, and we needed this. Everyone was emotional. It was extremely exciting.”
Lindsay had more than a little to do with the fact that the Knights were celebrating. The sophomore point guard was the undeniable catalyst in a 21-point fourth quarter, scoring 12 in of her season-high 24 in the quarter.
Lindsay’s back-to-back three-pointers in a 30-second span erased a six-point LC lead and knotted the score 48-48 with 2:19 remaining.
“I took it upon myself – I was like, ‘I need to help my team out, and I need to make a shot,’” Lindsay said. “They started falling in that quarter.
“At the beginning, I felt confident, and they weren’t going in, so I was getting less confident in myself. We were down by six most of the game, and I know we needed those two threes, which helped us tremendously.”
Laynie Doran also came up big in the final quarter, connecting on 3-of-4 from the foul line to give the Knights a 51-48 lead with 1:13 remaining.
LC’s Maile Erwin scored on a drive to pull the Cursaders to within two, but nine seconds later, Lindsay – who was 8-for-10 at the charity stripe – connected on a pair of foul shots. With eight seconds remaining, Erwin sank a pair at the line to make it a 53-52 game, but out of a timeout, Carley Adams buried a pair of foul shots to give the Knights their final margin of victory.
“What won the game tonight was two things – we stopped fouling, and we made foul shots down the stretch,” said NP coach Jen Carangi, whose team buried 9-of-11 from the foul line in the final quarter. “The first half we were putting them on the foul line, and they were making their foul shots.
“We’ve played from behind so often this season that I kind of felt the kids don’t get fazed by that anymore. So often we’ve gotten close and we haven’t gotten over that hump. Tonight we were able to do that. I’m so happy for them.”
Another key to the comeback was the Knights’ full-court pressure defense, which created several costly LC turnovers.
“They wanted it,” Carangi said. “They wanted to get this win. The fact that it’s the local rivalry – that all helps because they know all these kids. We had watched film, and we were doing our scouting report, and they knew them better than we did because they played with them, they played against them. I’m so happy for them. This is just a good win for us.”
Adams also finished in double figures with 13 for the Knights, it was her 11-point effort in the first half, which included a pair of threes, that kept the Knights in it. North Penn led by one after one quarter but trailed by five heading into the intermission, 25-20. They were on the short end of a 38-34 score after three quarters and saw that deficit grow to 43-34. That’s when Lindsay and company went to work.
“I don’t know the exact moment, but somewhere in the fourth quarter, we were coming out of a timeout, and all five of us came together in a huddle and just talked about how we can do this all as one, as a family, and we just fought back,” Adams said. “I think everybody contributed.
“We really needed a win tonight to boost our confidence and really have us ready to push through the rest of the season and get ready for the playoffs.”
Also for the Knights, 19th in the latest District One 6A rankings, Doran and Alaina Mullaly each added six points.
“I’m hoping that after this today we’re going to start winning our games,” Lindsay said. “We’re going to get more confident in each other.”
For LC, Emily Smith (15 points) and Erwin (11 points) led the way.
