UPPER MORELAND 56, CHELTENHAM 15
It had been a long time between games for both teams.
While the Lady Panthers had not played since Dec. 14 – a span of three long weeks, the Golden Bears last played on Dec. 21.
“This has been quite a roller coaster of a few weeks,” UM coach Matt Carroll said. “We had to shut down over break, and we only practiced twice and missed two games.
“Tuesday our game with New Hope was postponed and I know our girls really wanted to play that game. We found out today our game with Hatboro Horsham on Friday was postponed. As a coach, this season has been exhausting with all the changes in our schedule and protocol and trying to figure everything out and communicating it to our families in a timely fashion.
“Everything is being done out of precaution and I’m very thankful that the well-being of everyone is being considered, but that doesn’t make it easy for the ADs, parents, coaches and especially the players. I’m happy for our players that they finally had the chance to go out and play and kind of put life aside and go have fun.
“It was our first game since Dec 21, and I thought we played pretty well. We shot the ball much better today with seven players making a three. We played very unselfish basketball. They’re great kids who just want to play and see their teammates succeed. It was good to be back out there.”
Sparked by 12 points – including a pair of 3s – from EmmyFaith Wood, the Golden Bears opened up a 22-6 lead after one quarter. By halftime, they led 31-13 on their way to the decisive win.
Wood finished with 15 to share the game lead with teammate Holly Gohl, who also had 15 points. Kiera Coyle and Molly Meakim each contributed six points with both burying a pair of 3-pointers. All told, the Golden Bears had 10 3-pointers.
Mikahilia Leighton’s five points led the Lady Panthers.
“We played an okay first half of basketball, but then you can see we didn’t play in while,” Cheltenham coach Ben Bowman said. “UM is a solid team and shot really well from three.”
Upper Moreland (5-1, 3-0 SOL) will host New Hope-Solebury on Monday, and Cheltenham (0-4, 0-2) will host Plymouth Whitemarsh on Friday.
