Boys
9th Annaul Bears Tip-Off Tournament
UPPER MORELAND 66, FRANKLIN TOWNE CHARTER 25
Upper Moreland led by just one point after one quarter, and it looked as though the Bears would be in for a dogfight.
It turns out they weren’t.
The Bears erupted for 22 points in the second quarter and took a 37-19 lead into halftime. After allowing 14 points in the first quarter, they upped their game defensively and allowed just 11 points over the final three quarters – none in the fourth quarter – on their way to the big win.
Larry Hughes, Jose Hernandez and Cannon Campbell all finished the game in double figures and combined for 44 of their team’s points.
Key players: Larry Hughes (19 points), Jose Hernandez (14 points) and Cannon Campbell (11 points)
UM coach Dan Heiland: “Overall, I am very happy
with how we finished the game today. I thought we played well for it being our first game of the year. We return a strong core group, but we do have new faces in the lineup working to earn time and make a positive impact while in the game. We played very unselfish basketball today, I thought the guys shared the ball well, executed offense in the half court, and we played tough defense and rebounded well on both ends for 32 minutes. We were able to hold them to only 11 points after the first quarter. We have to flip the page to tomorrow though, it’s a quick turnaround and we will face a talented Owen J. Roberts team. They return a solid group from last year and they can really shoot it from behind the arc, so we will have our work cut out for us. Looking forward to the challenge.”
Up next: Upper Moreland will face Owen J Roberts in Saturday’s title game at 1 pm. Franklin Towne Charter will play MaST Charter in the consolation game at 11 am.

Springfield Twp coach Mike DeCandido: “I’m really proud of our guys tonight. You never know how the first game of the season will go, and they came out ready to play. It was a total team effort from our starters to the bench. They played really hard and fought the entire game. I’m proud of the relentlessness that we played with tonight. We have a fun group of hardworkers this year.”
–Props: “Jake Gibson and Will McLaughlin did all of the intangibles tonight. Jake was diving on the floor for loose balls, took a charge, made the extra pass when needed, and hit some threes. Will McLaughlin was a defensive anchor, with 14 deflections. Although it doesn’t show up in the score book, it was vital for our success tonight.

UPPER MORELAND 51, HARRY S TRUMAN 22
The Golden Bears have a lot of new faces in their lineup, and two of those players – Mia Taliaferro and Brooklyn Kavanagh – combined for 26 points to lead UM to a victory in its first non-league game.
The Golden Bears led 12-1 after one quarter and extended that to 30-8 by halftime on their way to the big win.
Key players: Mia Taliaferro (14 points), Brooklyn Kavanagh (12 points)
Upper Moreland coach Josh Adelman: “Tonight we got off to a great start, Mia Taliaferro hit a 3, and Brooklyn Kavanagh also hit a three, and we started to gain confidence. We had a 12-1 lead after the first period of play. We have lots of young and inexperienced players this year, so it was nice to see them execute plays against another opponent and work together on both sides of the floor. We continued to play really good defense and dominated the boards. We went into halftime with a 30-8 lead.
–A team effort: “We were able to get lots of players involved in today’s game which will pay dividends as players become more comfortable with the varsity level of basketball. Seven different players scored in the game, and we were led by Mia Taliaferro with 14 points. Brooklyn Kavanagh chipped in 12 points and Hailey Milks and Sheila Mangin both added 9 points each. The other nice thing was we were able to attack the basket and get to the foul line quite often. We shot 23 foul shots for the game, making 14 of them. This game is definitely something to build on and to help us grow as a team. “
Up next: Upper Moreland will host Jenkintown in a non-league game Tuesday (7pm).
