CHELTENHAM 67, PENN WOOD 60
Cheltenham and Penn Wood have had some classic battles in recent years, and the two teams had another on Thursday, but the Lady Panthers kept their winning streak alive over the Patriots, improving to 4-0 in the past three years.
“When you play Penn Wood, it’s like a war,” coach Brendan Nolan said. “You can’t shake them.
“A couple of times we got the lead up to 14 or 13, and I felt very comfortable, and the next thing you know, you look up and it’s a six-point game. They just never go away. They’re relentless on the offensive rebounds.
“This is the fourth time we’ve played them in the last three years, so we’re completely familiar with everything they do well, all their personnel. Dahnye Redd is an unbelievable player.”
Redd – who had 12 field goals – led all scorers with 29 points.
“She’s probably the biggest secret in District One, especially to Suburban One teams,” Nolan said. “If they’ve never seen her play or really followed them, they have no idea what kind of player she is. She’s outstanding.
“She doesn’t wow you in the warm-ups. She almost seems lackadaisical, but she’s just relentless on the offensive boards. She catches the ball in the high post. She can make jump shots from the high post, she can put the ball on the floor and attack, she’s strong. She really has no weakness to her game. She’s not an outside shooter because that’s really not what she does.
“She’s such a hard matchup because a guard cannot keep her out of the lane or keep her off the glass, and a big has trouble when she’s in the high post containing her because she can blow right by them. She’s very, very difficult to stop. Our whole game plan was designed around her, and she had 29 points. I guess I got a sense of what it’s like to guard Ashley Jones for opposing coaches.”
Sparked by nine points from both Ashley Jones and Gabbi Wright, the Lady Panthers sprinted to a 24-16 lead after one quarter and took a 36-29 lead into halftime. They played the Patriots basically to a draw in the second half.
Jones led the Panthers with an impressive double-double, finishing with 26 points and 13 assists to go along with six steals.
“She’s such a great passer,” Nolan said. “It’s probably her most underrated skill because she’s such a scorer, but she distributes the ball so well.
“The truth is if we caught the ball a little better and finished a little better, she’d have even more assists. She almost didn’t play tonight – she’s very sick, but she’s the ultimate gamer.”
Wright had 16 points and four rebounds.
“Gabbi has really blossomed this year into a multi-dimensional player,” Nolan said. “She played around the basket out of necessity early in her career.
“Now she’s out there handling the ball and hitting threes. She has really developed her game and is now a threat with the ball away from the basket and is the ultimate leader on the floor and in practice.”
Mia Leonard had just four points but was a force in the paint, pulling down 16 rebounds and blocking six shots.
“She’s coming along,” Nolan said. “She’s such a great kid. She’s like a gentle giant. You try and make it simple for kids. You tell them – ‘Defensively, just stick your hands up in the air and make them shoot it over you, and box out and rebound the ball.’ She does it as well as anyone I’ve told to do that. She keeps it simple.
“On the defensive end, she’s always in the right place, trying to get rebounds, and she does a good job of boxing out and keeping kids away. She’s tall (6-0) and has really long arms, which helps.”
The win came on the heels of a heartbreaking loss to Upper Dublin.
“I thought we played such a good game defensively,” Nolan said. “We had the lead at points in the fourth quarter, and we made just uncharacteristic mistakes.
“There are some things I wish I had done differently. Give them credit – they stick to what they do well.”
Cheltenham (4-1, 1-1 SOL) will host Springfield on Friday night.
