Mack Moore turned a pass from Becky Browndorf into a goal that turned out to be the game winner with 5:58 left in regulation, giving the visiting Flying Cardinals a non-league win that was anything but easy.
The Cardinals, who trailed 4-3 at halftime, still found themselves on the short end of the score until Caroline Wall connected for the equalizer with 7:17 remaining to set up the dramatic finish.
“We weren’t really ever able to settle the ball down,” coach Dee Cross said. “We just played too frantically, and we had turnovers at the end, but we were able to get the ball back.”
Moore and Browndorf each contributed two goals and two assists. Lindsey Schreiber added two goals and a single assist. Aly Breslin contributed a goal and an assist.
Sarah Herchenroder made seven saves in goal.
“Sarah had some great saves at the end to allow us to keep possession,” Cross said. “We were able to finally get the ball over the 50 and just kind of settle it down at the very end.
“Nothing was secure – being the first game of the season, working together. We had a couple of freshmen on the field that were just nervous and you could tell. Methacton is young, but they’re fast and very aggressive. They would triple the ball everywhere, and it took a while for us to figure all that out. I was very happy with the win today.”
Katy Benton and Sydney Tornetta scored two goals each for the Warriors while Liz Chapman, Mia Sheldon, and Mackenzie Henry scored one goal each.
Upper Dublin (1-0) will be leaving on Tuesday for a spring break trip to Texas, and on Wednesday, the Cardinals will face the Episcopal School of Dallas, the number one ranked team in Texas last year. On Thursday, the Flying Cardinals will take on Vandegrift.
