COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 5, METHACTON 4
Defense was the name of the game for the Indians, who found themselves staring at a 4-2 deficit at halftime but rallied to take the lead while keeping the Warriors off the scoreboard for the entire second half.
Anchoring the Indians defensively were seniors Joey Scardino and Connor Thatcher as well as a pair of freshmen, Nick Murray and Max Jogerst.
“They just played really outstanding ‘D,’ and my goalie made the saves,” coach John Fitzpatrick said of Phil Huddy, who turned away eight shots. “We really shut them down.”
While the defense was silencing the Warriors, the Indians’ offense came to life. Beckett Thompson scored a goal that turned out to be the game winner midway through the fourth quarter.
“They played a zone the entire game, and we struggled with that the first half,” Fitzpatrick said. “We figured it out in the second half and were able to get the lead.
“Basically, we went into a stall the last five minutes of the game.”
Thompson and Jack Early both had a pair of goals, and Jack Jogerst added a single goal.
Freddy Germana scooped up five ground balls to lead the Indians, and Thompson added four. Peter Lehman had three ground balls while Nick Murray, Ian Waitkus and Jack Jogerst had two each. Contributing one each were Jack Early, Max Jogerst and Connor Thatcher.
“We had three games this week, and that’s a lot of games for four days this week, so to come back and win this game was fantastic,” Fitzpatrick said.
Council Rock North (3-4, 0-1) will be on the road at Pennsbury on Tuesday night.

The Rams led from wire to wire, opening up a 3-1 lead after one quarter and extending that to 7-3 by halftime.
A key to the win was Matkowski’s dominance on the face-off where he won 18-of-21.

UPPER MORELAND 13, UPPER MERION 5
It was the story of two halves for the Golden Bears and Sydney Bachmayer.
The senior attack player scored one goal in a first half that saw the Golden Bears and Vikings battle to a 3-3 tie. In the second half, Bachmayer had a hand in five goals, scoring three and assisting on two others as the Golden Bears outscored their visitors 10-2.
“After we talked at halftime, we sort of figured out what we needed to fix on offense,” Bachmayer said. “We had a game yesterday afternoon (against Pennsbury), and a lot of us were starting out very slow. After we were out there running around and figured out what we needed to fix, it all came together at the end.”
Friday’s game was the renewal of a longstanding American Conference rivalry before Upper Merion moved to the Pioneer Athletic Conference this year, and for one half, it looked like it was going to be a war as the Vikings rallied from a 3-1 deficit to score a pair in the final 6:22, making it a 3-3 game at the intermission.
The Vikings won the opening draw of the second half, but Kayla Meakim came up with a ground ball on the defensive end, setting the stage for a Bachmayer goal (Emma Meakim assist). Back-to-back goals by Emma Meakim and Meghan O’Donnell put the Golden Bears on top 6-3, but Allison Shuster and Francesca Lindelow answered with goals for the Vikings to make it a 6-5 game with 13:36 remaining.
That turned out to be their last hurrah.
The Vikings won another draw, but in a clutch defensive play, Mel Wittick scooped up a ground ball near the crease, and moments later, Bachmayer found the net for a goal that marked the beginning of a dazzling 7-0 tear to close out the game.
A key was UM’s ability to control the draw. Playing major roles were Jessica Flanagan (seven draw controls) and Wittick (four draw controls).
“Once we started winning the draw, we were able to keep possession of the ball, and that’s what helped them not score as much either,” Bachmayer said. “
The Golden Bears won just two draws in the first half, but all of that changed when they seized control in the second half.
“Sydney (Bachmayer) and Moira (Olexa) are really good at directing (the ball), so it’s easy to know where it’s going,” Flanagan said. “I don’t know what was going on in the first half. We were tired from yesterday.”
Bachmayer led the Bears with four goals and two assists, and O’Donnell had a hat trick and one assist. Freshman Emma Meakim had two goals and three assists. Adding single goals were Chloe Leiter, Kayla Meakim, Flanagan and Bryanna Gordon. Flanagan added an assist.
Cheyenne Grumm recorded eight saves as part of a standout defensive effort.
“They’ve been doing so well with communication and collapsing,” coach Kim Frantz said. “I’m very happy where we’re at, but I’m also knowledgeable that the tough part of the season is coming.
“It’s given us a nice opportunity for the girls to come together, figure out how they’re playing with each other so that when they go into the next couple of weeks they’ll be ready.”
Upper Moreland (7-1, 2-0 SOL) will be on the road at Hatboro-Horsham on Wednesday.
Upper Merion 3-2 5
Upper Moreland 3-10 13
DOWNINGTOWN EAST 11, PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 8
The Colonials appeared to be in good shape when they went into halftime with a 7-4 lead. The second half was another story entirely as the visiting Cougars outscored their hosts 7-1.
“Draw control possession and turnovers hurt the Colonials in the second half,” coach Ellen Reilly said. “We need to learn how to finish a game in the second half and play with confidence.”
Ali Diamond had four goals and four assists in a strong offensive effort. Victoria Betterly had a hat trick and one assist, and Callie Kolkka added one goal and one assist.
Plymouth Whitemarsh (0-7, 0-2 SOL) will travel to Upper Dublin on Tuesday.
