Boys
SOL National Conference
Souderton 8, Pennsbury 6
This one was for Manny Puente.
Played on the one-year anniversary of the passing of Puente’s father Jason, Souderton rode a wave of emotion and a stellar effort from Puente to an 8-6 victory over Pennsbury in Friday’s National Conference game.
“Emotions were running high tonight,” Souderton coach Mark Cornes said. “Nobody was going to let Manny down. He’s a long stick middie, and everybody played for him tonight.
“Manny played lights out. It wasn’t just the team playing for Manny – Manny played the best game I’ve ever seen him play. He got probably 10 ground balls, he strip checked the other team numerous times. He was rock solid tonight.”
The Indians jumped out early and never trailed, leading 6-4 at halftime and 8-4 after three quarters en route to handing the Falcons (3-1 National, 5-2 overall) their first league defeat of the season.
“This was big – we needed it,” Cornes said. “We thought we had a good game plan going in to stop their middies – their middies are the source of their offense, and we thought we had a good plan for that.
“In the end, emotion won the day, and I think the better part is they kept their emotions under control. We’ve gotten up and we played all the CBs close in the first half and we’d fall apart in the second. Tonight they finally put four quarters together, and they got to realize what that means.”
Souderton’s first-year coach pointed to the defense – which kept the Falcons off the scoreboard in the second and third periods – as a key to the win.
“It was team defense,” Cornes said. “Pennsbury is dangerous, and we had to have a good team concept around the defense, and it finally came together.
“Our close defense – Tommy Goshow played a (heck) of a game, and Lance Pelych was superb tonight as well.”
Kobi Bui led the Souderton offense with three goals and one assist. Ty Quintos added two goals. Tyson Bui had one goal and one assist, Seth Grossman and Jamison McDivitt each scored once, and defenseman Nick Curotto earned an assist on a full-field pass.
“This is what we knew we were capable of playing like as a team, but we hadn’t put it together yet,” Cornes said. “In the three-game stretch against the CBs, we weren’t doing that, and that’s why we lost all three of those games.
“So tonight was kind of a spark. I think the team now realizes how good they can be and what kind of damage we can do for the rest of the year.”
For the Falcons, Avery Dysart led the way with four goals. Jack Kalinowski and Kolby Rannielo both had one goal while Michael DeZutel and Shane Siegmund each had an assist.
Pennsbury goalie Nico Cione was credited with 12 saves.
Souderton (5-3, 2-3 SOL) will return to action for a 7:30 pm game Tuesday at Pennridge. Pennsbury will look to bounce right back with an 11 am nonleague game today hosting American Conference frontrunner Plymouth Whitemarsh.

Ella Marina and Maddie Yoder combined for nine goals and three assists to lead the Spartans to the non-league win Friday night. Marina scored five goals and assisted on two others while Yoder had four goals and one assist.
The two teams were deadlocked 5-5 at halftime, but the Spartans had the better of play in the second half, outscoring the Rams 8-4.
“A true even match and back and forth game – I’m so happy that my girls were able to gain control of the game in the second half and come out on top,” Springfield coach Marissa Conove said. “During the first half, Pennridge was able to gain control of the draw and maintain pressure on us. In the second half, we were able to gain control of the draw.
“We played a relaxed, spread out attack to maintain possession and give our cutters more room to work. This strategy worked and allowed more teamwork and cohesive play. Our defense was able to maintain and defend our eight for most plays that Pennridge ran on us.”
Also for the Spartans, Shannon Meder had a pair of goals, Lauren Corrado contributed a goal and an assist while Fiona Rizzo added one goal.

West Chester Henderson 16, Souderton 13
Souderton battled to an 8-5 lead at halftime, but a surging West Chester Henderson scored 11 goals in the second half and pulled out a 16-13 victory in Friday’s nonleague matchup.
“We learned the importance of playing a whole 50 minutes today,” said Souderton coach Claudia LaMarca of the team’s first setback of the season. “The Souderton that finished the game was not the Souderton that started the game. Henderson capitalized on a lot of opportunities from the draw, which was an area we struggled with in the second half. We’re excited to get back to work tomorrow to refine some of the things we struggled with today.
“It was a competitive game, and both teams fought hard, but at the end of the day, we lost our momentum and Henderson found it.”
Souderton received 6 goals in a strong all-around effort from Lauren Hallman.
“Lauren had a great game,” LaMarca said. “She won important draws and scored at important times in the game. She’s a great asset all over the field.”
Reiley Knize and Clark Trowbridge each scored three for Souderton, Isabel John added one goal, and Caroline Kelly and Avery Farina each notched an assist.
The Indians (5-1, 3-0 SOL) look to return to their winning ways when they host North Penn Monday at 3:45 pm.
