Central Bucks West 10, Owen J Roberts 9
The Bucks pulled off a major upset, knocking off an Owen J Roberts team that was undefeated and ranked fifth in District One in a thriller at War Memorial Field.
“We took several steps forward today,” coach Tara Schmucker said. “In the past, we have been intimidated by strong teams from other conferences.
“We showed up today as a team, and I am so proud of these ladies. The defense played as a unit, the offense, for the most part, recognized when defense needed a break. (Goalie) Molly Naylor lifted the defense with some crucial saves after long periods on the defensive end, and we never stopped fighting even when we were not winning draws.”
The two teams battled to a 7-7 halftime tie, and the Bucks broke a 9-9 tie when Maddie Maio turned a pass from Meghan Tillger into a goal with 6:40 remaining. That lead held the rest of the way.
“Although OJR did get the ball back from our stall with 36 seconds (remaining), we stopped them on the defensive end,” Schmucker said. “Maddie Maio got a huge ground ball and drew a quick foul to give the Bucks possession for the remaining few seconds.”
Bryn Boylan and Finley Ueland led a balanced West attach with three goals each. Boylan also added an assist. Elle Ueland added two goals, and Paige Savard and Maddie Maio each had one goal. Jacq Fitzgerald and Meghan Tillger each had an assist.
“I have to say each player made an impact today, and it truly was a team effort,” Schmucker said. “Bryn and Finley had some great challenges.
“Jacq Fitzgerald had a tremendous defensive 1v1 game today, and Jacq, Rachel Shaw, Paige Savard, Maddie Maio and Meghan Darcy all came up with big caused turnovers that helped spark the team.”
With the win, West improved to 10-4 overall (5-0 SOL).
“We have an important week ahead of us, and I hope the girls gain confidence from today and continue to find a rhythm in the last few weeks of the regular season,” Schmucker said.
West will face Central Bucks South at War Memorial Field on Tuesday at 7:15 and will travel to North Penn on Thursday (7 p.m.).
