UPPER DUBLIN 11, SOUDERTON 5
Souderton took its first loss of the season to defending league and district champ Upper Dublin. UD raced out to a 3-0 first quarter lead and never looked back, led by Jed Hanson’s four scores.
Max Winebrake scored three times and added an assist, while Jerry Bardol, Sanjay Foster, Brian McCarry, Jason Williams and Cary Romig all added a goal. Hanson scooped four ground balls, while Winebrake and Bardol had three. Nick Sowers also had four ground balls, and Anthony Cerminara contributed three.
“We knew they were going to be tough,” UD head coach Dave Sowers said. “We got a little bit into our kids and said, ‘Look, we have to get after them.’”
Sophomore Lucas Roselli had a team-leading six ground balls and won 14 of his 20 faceoffs against Souderton ace Jake Phaup, who is bound for Syracuse, the top men’s lacrosse program in the country.
“It really started with Lucas,” Sowers said. “This young sophomore didn’t shy away from the senior (Phaup) who’s going to Syracuse and all of this hype. He was just being tough and saying, ‘Hey, I’m going to battle.’ It was good to see.”
Dillon Lojeski made 12 saves in goal and was aided by strong defense from Sowers, Cerminara, Chris McDermott, Jake DiMartille, Sam Polin and Malik Bootman.
The Souderton sidelines included a familiar face to fans of Upper Dublin lacrosse. Josh Wilcox, a 2004 graduate of UD and captain of his lacrosse team, was the defensive coordinator at Upper Dublin last year during the Flying Cardinals’ run to the state semifinals. This year he is serving in the same capacity at Souderton after accepting a teaching position in the district.
When Wilcox left, Sowers called on Roger Reynolds to fill the vacated position. Reynolds – who had been on the staff at Episcopal Academy – was the face-off coach of Christian Feliziani, a face-off specialist on the USA U19 gold medal team with former UD standout Michael Sowers.
“Roger came along and basically grabbed Lucas late in the picture,” coach Sowers said. “I called Lucas’ dad and said, ‘Roger really thinks Lucas has what it takes. Would he be interested in doing The Faceoff Academy?’ His dad said, ‘Lucas wants to be good.’”
If Sowers needed confirmation that Roselli was the right person for the job, he received it during a conversation with Feliziani.
“I said to him ‘What would be the top thing you would look for in a faceoff guy?’” Sowers said. “I thought he was going to say quickness. Christian said, ‘Coach, it’s toughness. You’ve got to be tough because you’ve got to battle. You’re going to come across a kid that’s better than you, but you’ve got to battle.’
“I coach Lucas in football. He’s a young sophomore, he’s tough as nails, and when Roger saw him, he said, ‘He’s got the toughness, he’s got the quickness, he’s got the athleticism.’ When Lucas’ dad said, ‘He wants to be good,’ that’s all it took.
“Roger had gotten in Lucas’ head before today’s game that Souderton really goes on how their faceoff guy goes. Lucas went out on the very first faceoff and won it clean and pushed out on a fast break. The next thing you know, the next faceoff and Lucas won that one. After that, I think he got in the kid’s head.”

ABINGTON 10, UPPER DUBLIN 9
Abington loaded the nonconference portion of its schedule with top-tier competition, with the idea it would pay off in the postseason.
Friday, the Ghosts got a playoff-type challenge from one of their fellow SOL American teams. It felt like a playoff game, it looked like a playoff game and it came down to the final few seconds. In the end, it was Abington that outlasted Upper Dublin in a duel between the last two unbeaten American teams.
As for getting that type of test from a conference foe? Abington coach Amanda Kammes was all for it.
"That was a playoff game in my opinion," the Ghosts’ coach said. "It's really nice to see some people in our league having good teams this year and there being a little bit of parity. That's only going to help the conference going into District I. That's going to give us a little more clout."
Sam McGee did her thing, scoring six goals, assisting another and picking up three ground balls, but this win was as much about the rest of the Ghosts. Abington's defense in particular was very good, able to pack in and force Upper Dublin to loft passes inside.
Abington had some problems finishing the game out, with Upper Dublin winning a couple of late draw controls and cutting a three-goal lead down to one with six seconds left, but it was the summation of those defensive plays that added up. It wasn't always an outright caused turnover, but it was plays like Hecka Morris deflecting a pass, Maddie Sjoholm taking a ground ball and flipping the field or Jules Greco sweeping it to dislodge the ball from a Cardinal player's stick that made things happen.
"I think a lot of people overlook (defense) but we feel we have one of the best defenses in the area," Kammes said. "Certainly it's a high score, but it's not as high as it could have been. Certainly shooting space plays a role in it, but I'm not going to tell my defense not to slide into help. If we slide into shooting space, so be it."
Upper Dublin took a 3-0 lead five minutes into the game, prompting an Abington timeout. The Ghosts responded, scoring the next five goals to take a lead they wouldn't lose again.
"We talked about what we needed to do and get back to playing Abington lacrosse," Ghosts midfielder Kaley Ehnow said. "Our schedule this year has been pretty tough, so going into this game we felt confident."
Upper Dublin's Becky Browndorf scored two goals in a 20-second span to tie the game at 5-5, but the Ghosts closed the half with some flair, netting two goals in the final 25 seconds to restore their lead. Cathy Staerk fired a pass from behind the net to a cutting McGee for the go-ahead goal and Casey McCallister made it 7-5 with a free-position shot as the halftime horn sounded.
Browndorf led Upper Dublin with three goals but Upper Dublin's young attack had stretches where it forced some shots, had a couple turnovers and missed a few other chances. Much like Abington's defensive plays added up, so did those errors for the visitors.
"They were taking us off of our passing but at the end, we came back and figured it out," Cardinals coach Dee Cross said. "It's about being consistent and keep working hard. I always talk about mental toughness, and they've shown that in a lot of games. Today, Abington was just a little bit better."
Cross added Abington didn't do anything her team wasn't prepared for in attack, but the way the Ghosts set up for draw controls was something the Cardinals hadn't seen yet this season. While Upper Dublin won more of the draw controls, Enhow took over in the circle during the Ghosts' runs and ended up with six draw controls for the game.
The Ghosts built a 10-6 edge with 11 minutes left, and got what looked like an insurance goal from Lindsay Baer with about five minutes to go. It turned out that Abington needed every one of them.
Caroline Wall and Jackie Rama, two of Upper Dublin's more potent attackers who had been held silent, scored to cut the 10-6 lead in half before Baer's goal. After the senior made it 11-8, Wall scored with three minutes to play and Rama got one in with six seconds left.
"Today was a tough one for both teams," Kammes said. "This weather was like playoff lacrosse. It's hot, miserable, humid, it's what you're going to see all the way into May. This was a big one for us. I knew and the kids knew that this year was going to be much more of a battle and that was the point. I want them to feel like they've already been in the playoffs when we get there."
Abington (8-3, 5-0 SOL) will face Penn Charter on Saturday at Radnor High School as part of the Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival in a non-league game, and Upper Dublin (8-3, 4-1) will take on Shipley School on Saturday at the Katie Samson Festival in a non-league game.
