Check out the recaps for SOL boys/girls lacrosse teams in action Thursday.
Boys
Non-league
NEW HOPE-SOLEBURY 10, NESHAMINY 8
In a non-league contest that could have gone either way, it was the Lions notching the win with a late surge.
“It was a hard fought game and came down to the last three minutes,” Neshaminy coach John Donato said. “Credit the Lions for finishing in the end.”
Despite the outcome, the Redskins’ coach liked a lot of things that he saw.
“We have improved both our individual and team skills with each game,” Donato said. “This game was a bit of a heartbreak because we could sense a win, but it’s encouraging to see our development.”
Liam Ames had two goals and an assist while Ethan Roney and Patrick Courtney both added a pair of goals. Ethan Roscoe and Jack McVey each had one goal, and Jack Sexton and Ayden Demi both had an assist.
“Ethan Roney, still relatively new to the sport, had a terrific game on both sides of the midfield and scored two goals,” Donato said. “Our young attack played well together with Liam Ames, Patrick Courtney and Jack McVey combining for five goals.
“Our team defense was solid throughout the afternoon led by D-Middies Shyke Dogiani and Kieran Meehan.
“Ryan Rickards was solid in goal with 12 saves.”
New Hope-Solebury (1-1) will host William Tennent in its SOL opener on Friday, and Neshaminy (0-4, 0-2 SOL) will host Council Rock South on Tuesday for the Redskins’ Senior Night game.
Girls
Non-league
ABINGTON 12, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 11
The Ghosts displayed a flare for the dramatic, earning the thrilling win when Mei Mei Chung turned a Maddie Hinkle pass into the game-winner with five seconds remaining in regulation.
“There was literally five seconds left in the game,” Abington coach Amalie Kreitman said. “They worked so hard – both teams did. They really pulled it together, and they played to the whistle today. It was a really good game.”
Hinkle and Lesha Karaba led the Ghosts’ attack with four goals each. Shea Gormley added a pair while Chung and Avery Sullivan had one each.
The Ghosts took a 8-7 lead into halftime, and both teams scored four goals in the second half. Abington had a two-goal lead late, but the Titans rallied to knot the score only to see Chung deliver the game-winner as time was about to expire.
“I honestly thought that we were going to go into overtime,” said Kreitman, whose team was coming off a one-goal loss to Souderton on Tuesday. “I told my assistant, ‘We can’t do this every time. My heart can’t handle the pressure.’
“We worked hard on transition in practice yesterday, and you could see it in our transition today. It was so fluid, they moved the ball, they knew exactly what to do.”
Kreitman had high praise for her defense comprised of Caroline Hughes, Lilly Alessandro, Audrey Silverman and Wren Castor.
“Today our biggest thing was communication,” the Ghosts’ coach said. “We worked hard yesterday at practice, communicating and keeping our sticks horizontally. We crashed when a player was in the critical area.
“We were sliding. We were saying, ‘I’ve got your help,’ all that great communication. The defense held it together today way better than the other day.”
Goalie Chloe Herghelegiu recorded 15 saves in a strong outing.
“Chloe turned it around,” Kreitman said. “She had a tough spot in the beginning, but in the second half and in the last 10 minutes, she was amazing.”
Janessa Watson’s four-goal, one-assist effort led the Titans. Kate Victor added three goals and two assists while Tegan Mullan had two goals and one assist. Contributing one goal and one assist were Bridget Curtis and Grace Gannon.
Goalie Gaby Mayo was credited with eight saves.
“The girls had a tough loss as they came back and tied Abington with 1:01 left in the game,” South coach Janique Craig said. “It was a hard fought game on both ends and was a great experience for our team. This will only make our team stronger and prepare us for postseason play.”
Abington (1-1) will host Quakertown on Monday, and Central Bucks South (1-4, 1-0 SOL) will travel to Pennridge on Monday.
Abington 8-4 12
