Girls
COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 15, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 14
After her team’s fifth one-goal game of the season – this one a nail biter at CB East, Krista Dayton-Ventresca had a message for her jayvee team.
“I told them – ‘You know what, they’re going to give me a heart attack. You guys have to promise me when you’re on varsity you’re going to win by at least five goals. I really can’t handle this,’” the Indians’ coach said.
How tense was this one?
“It was exceptionally intense, uncomfortably tense, terribly tense,” Dayton-Ventresca said. “It was shame anybody had to lose, but it sure is a heck of a lot nicer to come out on top.”
With Wednesday’s win, the Indians are now 3-2 in one-goal games, but this one was anything but easy. The Indians took a 9-6 lead into halftime, but the Patriots came roaring back to make it a 10-10 game.
“It was neck-in-neck,” said Dayton-Ventresca. “At one point, we did have a five-goal lead, and they chipped away. We were up by three, and they caught up. Then we went up again, and they caught up. They didn’t go away.
“I think all the girls played well. Both teams played well. There was lots of good stuff, but there were a lot of mistakes. We were evenly matched. Their defense was very strong and tenacious.”
The Indians found themselves clinging to a one-goal lead with time winding down.
“We went into basically a stall – it was only three minutes, and I said, ‘If you’re going to shoot, you better be 95 percent sure it’s going in,’” Dayton-Ventresca said. “I think we probably turned it over three times in the last three minutes.
“My defense had a couple of stops. It got a little crazy at the end, but like I told the girls – ‘You played a whole 50 minutes. If you made a mistake, you tried to make up for it. No one was dogging it on the field.’”
Both teams received contributions from numerous players. Six different players scored goals for the Indians, and seven found the back of the net for the Patriots.
Claire Jarema led the Indians with five goals while Devon Mela added four goals and one assist. Anna Lehman scored three goals and also had three assists. Greta Rolli, Megan Haggerty and Emily Booth each added a single goal. Haggerty also added a pair of assists while Rolli had one helper.
“It wasn’t just our trifecta scoring goals today,” Dayton-Ventresca said of the high-scoring trio of Mela, Lehman and Jarema. “There were three other goal scorers, and a few others had assists, so it was a real team effort.
“Having lost Lauren D’Ameila (knee injury), the defense had to adjust. Our first defensive sub is now a defensive starter. They had to make some adjustments, so they’re not 100 percent jelled. They did a good job of keeping their composure. I think both teams did a great job. Kelly’s team is always fierce, they’re always ready to play.”
Freshman Cailey Lever led the Patriots with four goals while Maggie Vetter had three goals and one assist. Riley Donnelly had a hand in five goals, scoring twice and assisting on three others. Whitney Deitz had two goals and one assist, and Katelyn Stout and Kaitlyn Mikalic both had one goal and one assist. Katelin Cahill added one goal, and Mel Burian had one assist.
Coach Kelly White lauded Bella Ridolfi for turning in an “outstanding game defensively.”
The Patriots held a 27-25 advantage in shots.
