PIAA 3A opening round
#1-4 WISSAHICKON 10, #11-1 FREEDOM 9
Sparked by the five-goal effort of Nicholas Donofrio and the seven-point game of Kyle Lehman, the visiting Trojans opened up a 5-2 lead over the District 11 champions and led the rest of the way on their way to the hard-fought win in Tuesday’s state opener.
“It was a good team win,” Wissahickon coach Matt Conway said. “The defense played well, and our goalie, Kyle Crump, came up with some big saves.
“The offense did most of the damage in the first half in transition, and then it was mostly about killing the clock in the fourth quarter.”
In addition to Donofrio, Lehman – who played the role of facilitator – had one goal and six assists. Andrew Slackman added two goals and one assist, and Kyle Doll had two goals.
Crump anchored the defense in goal with 14 saves.
Wissahickon (17-4, 9-0 SOL) will face District 1 runner-up Radnor in a state quarterfinal game on Saturday at a location and time to be determined. Radnor defeated District 3’s fourth place squad, Dallastown, 16-3 in Tuesday’s opening round.

PIAA 2A opening round
#12-1 ARCHBISHOP CAROLL 17, UPPER MORELAND 2
The Golden Bears scored the game’s first goal. The remainder of the half belonged to the two-time defending state champions, who opened up a 12-1 halftime lead on their way to the big win.
“While the outcome wasn’t what we had hoped for, I couldn’t be more proud of this team and all of their accomplishments this year,” UM coach Kim Frantz said. “We were so excited to have made it to this point.
“The game started with Annalise (Messina) winning the first draw control and Olivia Meakim scoring to open the game. Following the first goal, we struggled some to get it down on offense in the first half.
“The second half we came out battling, and Addi Hurley came out big with 14 saves, and our defense made some adjustments and we were able to make Archbishop Carroll work for each of their goals. Second half we were able to hold them to five goals. Archbishop Carroll is a very talented team. We had some great moments against them. We are already looking to next year and can’t wait for more lacrosse. One Team One Dream!”
Scoring one goal each for the Golden Bears were Meakim and Messina. Regan Cummins had one assist.
Addi Hurley had 18 saves in goal in a strong outing.
Upper Moreland closed out its season with a 10-1 record and a share of the SOL American Conference crown. The Golden Bears were 19-4 overall.
