NESHAMINY 2, CUMBERLAND VALLEY 1 (OT)
Neshaminy and Cumberland Valley – ranked third and fourth respectively in last week’s PSCA large school rankings – are legitimate state powers, and Saturday’s non-league match in Langhorne was every bit as close as the rankings suggested it would be.
Brianna Tobin scored the game winner in the 85th minute, turning a Brooke Mullin header into a goal.
“It came from out wide, and then Brooke kind of flicked it up – it dropped, and Brianna was on the left post and tucked it away,” coach Chelsea Lovelace said.
The win came on the heels of a disappointing overtime loss to Pennsbury, the state’s top-ranked team, two days earlier.
“When I brought the girls in before the first overtime, I said, ‘Listen, we are not ending the way we ended on Thursday. There’s no way. This is what we worked for all preseason,’” Lovelace said. “They just looked tired, and I said, ‘You just have to fight through and find a goal.’
“They did in the first four minutes, which was good because they were tired. It was nice to get the win and continue into next week.”
The visiting Eagles struck first in the 25th minute and held that 1-0 lead until the 66th minute when Emily Tantala turned a crossed ball by Jackie Ziegler into a goal, setting the stage for overtime.
“They were well coached, they possessed the ball a lot, and they definitely outworked us for the majority of the game,” Lovelace said. “But after they scored their first goal, we knew we had to get one just to get our heads back in the game because we just weren’t playing well after that.
“Once we got the first goal, we started to look like a whole different team. Everyone was energized, and we were trying to push for the second one.”
Both teams took four shots, and Lovelace credited the strong play of her back line players – Maggie Daeche, Nicole Palmer, Genna Obringer and Hannah Stonkus.
“Our back four always do a great job,” the Redskins’ said. “I know defenders don’t always get recognized – I was a defender so I know how it is.
“We were really solid in the back. Riley Nyhus, who plays in the center midfield, had a great game – just winning 50-50 balls. Her energy was contagious.”
Redskin keepers Victoria Smith and Riley Spingler combined for four saves. Eagles' goalie Sydney Bruckner had three saves.
Neshaminy (5-1, 2-1 SOL) will be on the road at Council Rock North on Tuesday.
