BENSALEM 3, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 1
In a glittering performance, Sidney Doherty scored three second half goals, singlehandedly allowing the Owls to turn a 1-0 halftime deficit into the huge win.
“She’s just an all around excellent player,” said coach Lew Mladjen of Doherty, who has 11 goals on the season. “She just took over the game.”
The Golden Hawks took a 1-0 lead, thanks to a Julie Rebh goal midway through the first half. Emily Discavage contributed the assist.
The second half belonged to Doherty, who scored the equalizer in the 48th minute with an assist from Paige Wendling. Julia Rymarczuk assisted on Wendling’s goal in the 67th minute, and 10 minutes later, Doherty put the finishing touches on a stellar performance when she found the back of the net on a free kick for the 3-1 final.
“Honestly, the wind was a major factor,” Mladjen said. “South had the wind at their backs in the first half, and they had opportunities in the first half.
“When we got to the half at 1-0, the wind was a legitimate enough factor that it was going to play a role in the second half. It certainly changed in that respect for us.”
The Owls’ coach credited the performance of senior defensive back Amanda Myers.
“She just had a very good game,” Mladjen said. “She was covered up on Nikki Caffey. “She’s their big gun up top, she goes hard for all 80 minutes, and Amanda was with her step for step in a couple of real critical moments in the game.”
Wednesday’s win came on the heels of back-to-back heartbreaking losses for the Owls.
“The girls just picked it up a notch,” Mladjen said. “We’ve had two tough games in a row.
“Friday night we lost in double overtime to Council Rock North, and yesterday we played Neshaminy. We were winning 1-0 at half, and we were winning 2-1 with 20 minutes to play and lost.
“We’ve been playing good soccer over these past three games, and in the second half, they just put it together. I’m very happy for them.”
The win was the first for the Owls over a Council Rock school since Mladjen took over the helm six years ago.
The Owls are 3-5 in league play (4-7 overall) while the Golden Hawks are 5-3 in the league (7-3 overall).

PENNRIDGE 1, WISSAHICKON 1 (2 OT)
The two teams exchanged late goals and then played through a pair of scoreless overtimes.
Jess Milligan put the Rams on the scoreboard in the 64th minute, connecting on a shot just right of the six-yard box.
Less than three minutes later, senior captain Alyssa Ryan – on a free kick left of the 18 – ripped a high shot that hit the weak side upper 90 to knot the score.
“In the first half, Wissahickon came out swinging,” Wissahickon coach Shannon Creamer-Franke said of her team’s 7-3 edge in shots.
The Trojans managed just four shots the rest of the way while the Rams took nine.
Creamer-Franke lauded the performances of several of her players.
“Anna Chiodo-Ortiz, senior captain and center back, had an incredible game alongside her fellow backs – Mary Matthews, Kirsten Haney and Emily Vervlied,” the Trojans’ coach said. “Jasmine Bishop and Talia Abrahams should also be credited for their play.”
Wissahickon keeper Keanna Haney had three saves in the second half and three more in overtime play, receiving Creamer-Franke’s nod for game MVP.
“We came in wanting the win, but we will settle for the tie,” the Trojans’ coach said. “I am so happy with how our girls set the tone today, and even better, stuck with that high pace for all 100 minutes.”
