The Golden Bears took the suspense out of Tuesday’s District One AA opener early. Jenna Getz made certain of that, scoring two goals in a four-minute span and finishing with the hat trick to lead the attack.
Getz’s first goal – set up by a Jess Flanagan crossing pass from the right wing – was all the Bears would have needed, but they added two more in a first half they controlled but were awarded no corners.
“It was really important for us to come out strong,” Getz said. “We were a little disappointed that we didn’t get any corners in the first half, but we were really glad we scored three goals.
“It was weird because we talked about how many corners we wanted to get and where they were going to go, and we didn’t get any, but we really came out and scored.”
Delaney Smith set up the second goal by Getz, and at the 12:24 mark, Delaney converted a penalty stroke into a goal with a powerful shot to send the Bears into halftime with a comfortable 3-0 lead.
“It boosts our confidence,” said senior Emily Jeinnings of the Bears’ quick start. “We feel like when we start strong it picks us up for the rest of the game.”
Quick starts, according to junior Emily Keene, have not been a trademark of the Golden Bears, who tacked on a Getz goal late in the second half for the 4-0 final.
“It’s essential to have a quick start because we tend to start off our games on the lower end of our playing,” she said. “The further we get in the game, especially if we have a lead, all of us collectively tend to pick up our game a lot.“Normally, if we have one player that picks us up, everyone works together as a whole. It’s kind of a whole team feeling. We all play on the same level at once. I also think it shows the other team that we’re not the team we used to be. We have a lot more in us than we used to.”
The Lions found that out firsthand on Tuesday. In last year’s regular season finale, they rolled to a 6-0 win over the Golden Bears. This year, the two teams opted out of their annual regular season meeting – rescheduled for last Friday – when they realized they were meeting in the opening round of districts, and the Bears wasted little time before taking care of business in the high stakes district contest.
Coach Karen Grossi lauded the strong play of Jeinnings and Keene.
“At center back, they were just consistent, and without those two defensively, we could have been in trouble,” the Bears’ coach said. “Jess Flanagan, on the forward line, did an excellent job of cutting back to the ball, and Del (Smith) and Jenna (Getz) getting their stick on the ball.”
As a result of Tuesday’s win, the Golden Bears will make their first trip to the second round of districts since 2008.
“It’s so exciting,” Getz said. “I don’t want the season to end. None of us do.
“The amount of intensity we’re going to have for this next game is insane.”
Upper Moreland (14-4, 11-3 SOL) will travel to fourth-seeded Gwynedd Mercy in a second round game on Thursday.
