#5 CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 3, #21 AVON GROVE 1
The Patriots got over the hump of the second round losses that has plagued the team in the past, earning a scintillating 3-1 win over a strong Avon Grove squad.
“All I can say is WOW!” coach Scott Geller said. “This was a true team effort. I'm so happy to see these kids play with such heart, fight and discipline.
“After the first set, the second thru fourth really tested our mental toughness. There were ups and downs, but when we settled in, there was no stopping us.
“These kids never gave up, and that is what i love so much about them! Put any big game in front of them and they're ready to battle to the end! We received huge contributions at the net tonight by Julia Gallagher (six blocks to go along with seven kills). Our middles really made a difference in the game tonight!”
Natalie Arm (12 kills, one ace, 10 digs), Jenn Krzeminski (12 kills, two blocks) and Krista Helveston (nine kills, two aces, 14 digs) also had big games for the Patriots. Libero Erin Lane led the defense with 27 digs and one ace. Kate Woolsey added one kill and 10 digs, and Madie D’Angelo had one ace and five digs.
CB East will face fourth-seeded Perkiomen Valley in Tuesday’s quarterfinal round.
#2 GREAT VALLEY 3, #18 COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 0 (25-20, 25-21, 26-24)
The visiting Indians gave the Patriots all they could handle in each of the three sets.
“Each set was close and exciting,” coach Mike Adams said. “Both teams traded leads in the score many times in each set. The energy was high and CRN gave Great Valley a very competitive match.”
Senior captain Katie Rentz led the Indians with 15 kills, three digs and one block. Junior middle blocker Danae Barkley added 10 kills and three blocks, and Birdie Ligos had six kills and six digs. Hadley Grendman contributed six kills and four blocks, and Aly Kuiken had two kills and two blocks.
Setter Johanna Batterton handed out 32 assists to go along with 18 digs and one ace. Maddy Moore had a big night with nine kills and two aces. Carrie Kuiken and Grace Schweizer both contributed three digs and one ace.
#6 PENNCREST 3, #22 ABINGTON 1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-12, 25-23)
The Ghosts battled but came up short in Thursday’s second round match at Penncrest. Leah Simmons closed out a standout season with 16 kills, five blocks and five digs. Setter Emma Garg had 28 assists, four aces and six digs, and Jamie Kidd had 10 digs and one kill. Claire Gassman (six kills, three digs), Grace Whitney (five kills, two blocks) and Hannah Dalton (two blocks, six kills) also contributed at the net. Gwen Lockery had four digs for the Ghosts.
