Plymouth Whitemarsh coach Charise Halteman:
–The game: “I wouldn’t say it was our best game – maybe it was playoff nerves. I don’t know, but I felt like to took us a little while to settle into the game. Credit to Pennridge for being kind of disruptive. We really didn’t let them have many meaningful attacking moments. They really weren’t in our defensive circle all that often. Our goalkeeper only had one actual save, so I felt like our defense was breaking things down. They only had one attacking corner, and we had 10 attacking corners and scored on three of them, so that’ s where our goals came from. I thought it was a little sloppy in the field of play, but we executed when we needed to.
“Like I said, I wouldn’t say this was our best game, but I talked to the team, and that’s sometimes how playoffs go, and you have to be the more composed team and kind of play the long game a little bit and trust the process.”
–Props “Kate Dobrowolski played an excellent game at right back. She was just very composed and just really shut down a lot of their attacks and then was able to go on the attack and earn fouls and gain free hits on possessions. She played a really good game back there.”
Pennridge coach Chris Chookagian on the game: “Today’s game was definitely one of the best games of our season. And that is exactly what you hope for when you are playing at this point in October. Playing a full 60 minutes is something we’ve talked about all season long and had a few swings in the game that led to goals against.
“PW has always been a strong team in District 1, as long as I can remember, and the score doesn’t truly reflect the game that was played.
“This Pennridge team plays in one of the toughest conferences in the state and flipped the script from last year. Six of Six SOL Colonial teams made it into the PIAA District 1 3A Tournament. Although this is the end of the fall campaign for us, we have our eyes set on doing the work to being back here next October. “
–Props: “The coaches want to shout out all of our players who left it all out there on the field today. The defense shut down a lot of attacking opportunities, the midfield transitioned the ball well, and our attack was pressing the opposition consistently throughout the game.”
Up next: Plymouth Whitemarsh (15-4, 10-0 SOL) will travel to #7 Downingtown West for a second round game Wednesday. Pennridge closed out its season with a 6-12 record.

#2 BISHOP SHANAHAN 6, #15 UPPER MORELAND 0
(Article submitted by Upper Moreland field hockey)
Upper Moreland battled throughout the game against an aggressive, well-skilled Bishop Shanahan team. This was definitely a growth experience for an Upper Moreland team with several key younger players and a senior class filled with nurturing leaders.
The Bears are proud that we played well enough to keep the score competitive until the fourth quarter. It was 2-0 at half, and UM players were getting used to the tempo and raising our level of play. The score was 3-0 going into the fourth quarter.
In the first half, Tierney Hogan had 12 saves including a save on a penalty stroke. Addi Gans, Abby Kelly and Reese Purcell were locked in defensively, turning away the Eagles time and time again. For some of our players, it took some time to adjust to the speed and higher level of play, but midfielders Bridget Hess and Olivia Torres handled the pressure right from the start, leading the team with their skillful stick work and making great passes up the field.
MJ Reilly, Ella Gould and Melissa Torpey worked hard being aggressive and making some great passes to keep possession over the 50. We did get some breakaways, but Bishop Shanahan’s defense was solid. Sophomores Taylor Pagano, Hannah Gardner, Harper Richmond, and Lyla Soleau gave relentless effort throughout their field time, and this experience will prepare them for the future. Juniors Gianna Jones and Sekai Bell came in and played hard off the bench giving starters a break.
I have coached for 39 years, and this is a very special team for how they treat each other, enjoy and are grateful for their time together, push each other in practice and accept each other no matter grade level or skill level. They are definitely a family.
We are also proud that 17 different players played in the game tonight, and the six seniors finished the game on the field together for their last game – Gans, Kelly, Gould, Hogan, Torpey and Sarah Hodum.
Tierney Hogan summed up the team’s emotions saying “ Even though the game didn’t go as we wanted, our team still stuck it out and continued to play our game and never gave up. We all played very well tonight, and Bishop Shanahan definitely was not prepared for us to play like we did. Defense gave it their all tonight with important defensive saves from Abby Kelly and Addi Gans, and we were all able to keep Shanahan working before allowing a goal in.
Senior goalie Tierney Hogan finished with 25 saves, bringing her season total up to 356 saves. Even thought it was 6-0, we really held them off for a while. I was very proud of them.
Upper Moreland field hockey is on the rise and will only continue to keep going up from here in the following seasons. I know this team will find itself back in the playoffs in the years to come and continue to push further and grow.”
Upper Moreland closed out its season with a 9-9-1 record.
