PENNSBURY 5, BENSALEM 0
(Article submitted by Pennsbury field hockey)
Hello October!
The Pennsbury Falcons hosted the Bensalem Owls for a battle under the lights – their second meeting of the season. The PHS athletic interns got some experience broadcasting on the livestream and helped to set the scene for a great night of field hockey. It started off with an intense and exciting JV game that ended locked at a 0-0 tie, and when seven o’clock rolled around, the varsity Falcons and Owls took the field head to head ready to keep the momentum going.
The Black and Orange lit up the scoreboard first, three minutes after the starting whistle. Senior Ava Jordan sent a beautifully placed ball across the circle to connect with fellow senior Alaina Bird who smashed it against the backboard with authority to go up 1-0. Six minutes later, sophomore Ryan Burdette collected a rebound off the goalie’s pads, giving her team a two-goal lead going into the second quarter.
The Falcons kicked off the second quarter by capitalizing on a penalty corner opportunity. Ava Jordan inserted to Cailyn Reilly, who put the ball on cage (looking for a tip), and it found its way into the cage off of the initial shot. Senior Liv Coen and sophomore Regan Rodriguez paired up for goal number four with two minutes remaining in the first half. Coen sent a perfectly placed cross ball, and Rodriguez was in the right place, poised for the one time and executed it with precision. Rodriguez has been locked in and finding her groove for the Falcons over the past several games and helping to make a lot of great things happen.
The final goal of the game came in the third quarter when Ava Pinto assisted Angelina Kenney as they worked the ball around the keeper and upped the score to 5-0.
The Owls held Pennsbury scoreless in the fourth quarter with really strong defensive stands led by multiple goal keepers.
“That Bensalem team can never be underestimated,” coach Traci Curtis said. “They come out ready to fight and dig deep for a full 60 minutes. Gary (Kubik) is doing an incredible job leading them.
“Our girls came out on fire and that energy rippled across the board. We are happy with their intensity, connection, effort, and overall performance tonight. It is exciting to see the massive growth and watch our field hockey family move forward as one united force.”
Key contributors who continue to consistently keep us solid include – Abby Iacona, Angelina Kenney, Cailyn Reilly, Ava Jordan, Avalee Shumski, and Ryan Burdette.
In addition to the victory on the field, PHS won in the area of service learning as they dedicated this game to their school’s WINK for PINK organization with the goal of helping to raise awareness for Breast Cancer and donate money to research. This night was the perfect time to kick off October and Breast Cancer Awareness Month – making a small donation can help in a HUGE way.
Pennsbury (10-4, 4-3 SOL) will travel to Neshaminy on Monday, and Bensalem (4-9, 1-6) will be on the road at Harry S Truman (6:30 pm).

SOUDERTON 4, PENNRIDGE 1
Ali Casiato might want to consider a career as an event planner.
The Souderton assistant coach – the daughter of Souderton coach Sue Casiato – found out on Monday that just one win separated her mother from 100 wins.
“I was doing some paperwork, and for some reason, I thought – ‘I feel this year I should be close to a hundred wins,” Sue Casiato said. “I added them up, and I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’m at 99.’
“The only person I told was my husband, and he said, ‘Are you going to tell your daughter?’ I was like, ‘No, I don’t need everyone to know,’ so, of course, the second I turned around, my husband went and told my daughter.”
Ali needed no time at all to get the ball rolling.
“I got letters from a lot of alumni, and they had a nice celebration on the field after the game,” Casciato said. “It was very nice. Ali pulled this together in one day.
“The game was over, and all these banners, balloons and cupcakes appeared. It was definitely a surprise.”
For Casciato, coaching is about a whole lot more than wins and losses.
“I was thinking about it on my way home today – the nicest compliment I ever got, and it wasn’t from one of my current players, it was one of my club players,” Casciato said. “She reached out to tell me she had committed, and she said, ‘I just want you to know – you’re the coach that made me love the sport.’
“I’ve been really lucky because my assistant coaches are all passionate too. Souderton has never really had a ton of just hockey players. I’m always fortunate
enough to get really good athletes, one or two studs and then a bunch of lacrosse players who in three years are like – ‘I really learned to love this.’”
As for Tuesday’s game, the Rams took a 1-0 lead early in the second quarter on a goal by Audrey Frentzen, but the Indians answered with a pair of goals – both by Tatum Andrews.
The Indians added a pair of goals in the third quarter – one each from Julia Blair and Ava Jones. Jones and Blair both also had an assist and Autumn Wagner had a pair of assists.

Souderton coach Sue Casciato on the game: “Pennridge came out firing on all cylinders. We were behind 1-0 at one point. They always play us tough. I have a lot of people sick right now. I was hoping I could use my bench a little more than I did. The game stayed close for a long time.
“I gave them off tomorrow, and you would have thought they won the state championship. I was like, ‘Really?’ But people are banged up and sick.”
Pennridge coach Elena Romesburg on the game: “Super proud of our team. We played a lot better compared to the first time we played this team.
“Big congratulations to Souderton’s coach on her 100th win tonight. They are a very competitive and well coached team.”
–Props: “Our defense held strong, and we had a number of standout performances from our midfielders Leah Verespy, Lexi Capo and Deegan Smith. Audrey Frentzen was able to connect on a goal in the second quarter, and she continues to have a nose for the goal this season. Kira Mangin, Gianna Nulty and Dhwani Bengali played very well on the defensive side.”
Up next: Souderton (10-3, 8-2 SOL) will play Dock Mennonite on Saturday (12:45 pm), and Pennridge (4-8, 1-6) will host Central Bucks East on Monday.

CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 3, NORTH PENN 1
The Bucks – playing with senior starter Calista Boos (broken wrist) – took an early 1-0 lead with just over a minute remaining in the opening quarter when Eve Damsker scored during corner play with an Aida Ierubino assist.
Neither team scored again until North Penn’s Ashley Barwis found the cage with six minutes remaining in the third quarter to knot the score. West’s Heidi Schoenleber turned the rebound of a goalie save into a goal during corner play in the closing minutes of the quarter. Ierubino added an insurance goal late in the fourth quarter.
The Bucks held a 16-11 advantage in shots while the Knights had an 8-7 edge in corners.
Scoring Summary
First quarter
Eve Damsker (CBW) from Aida Ierubino 1:15
Second quarter – No score
Third quarter
Ashleigh Barwis (NP) 6:18
Heidi Schoenleber (CBW) 1:06
Fourth quarter
Aida Ierubino (CBW) 3:34
Central Bucks West coach Lori Ierubino:
–A setback: “Calista Boos, one of our senior starters, broke her wrist in our last game against Pennridge. She was key on our corners, key on the middle of our field connecting our defense to offense, so that was definitely a big loss.
“Prior to the Pennridge game, we were really starting to click and get people in the exact positions where I wanted them. I was starting to figure out our sub rotations, and then the injury happens, and it’s sort of starting from scratch, trying new things and figuring out who needs to go where.
“I told the girls – I’m glad that we have North Penn and Souderton and the sister schools to play before we go to playoffs to actually see if what we’re trying is going to work because we don’t know when she’ll be back or if she’ll be back. These teams are good, so we’ll be able to see some of our weaknesses and the season’s not on the line. We’re trying to look for the silver lining and make the best of it.”
–The game: “Tonight we did a little something different each quarter for me to see new combinations and what we’re going to do until she hopefully gets back, and they performed. It was sloppy at times and a little messy at times just because people weren’t where they have been.
“North Penn brings an intensity like no other team. It doesn’t matter what the score is – it could be the start of the game or the last minute of the game, you know they’re going to have this high level of intensity.
“Being our first game after the loss (of Boos), I was a little nervous, but the girls got it done. It was 3-1, and we’ll take it. We still have a bunch of games left in our season, so hopefully, we’ll get back into that groove we were in right before Pennridge and hopefully Cal’s back, and I’ll have even more flexibility with my lineup and what structure we use. Hopefully, we’ll be successful in the new way as we were in the past way.”
–Props: “We had to move things around and Eve Damsker and Heidi Schoenleber filled in the middle for us and did a great job. It’s like a domino, you move one, and it affects everything. Aida (Ierubino) was able to get on the board with a goal and an assist, so that was good.
“I told my girls I’m so proud of them. All of them didn’t even question it. If they were a forward one game and I’d ask them to be in the back, they’d have done it. Cal (Boos) was great energy on the sideline with us. I had someone to commiserate with and see things with. She knows the game well, so that was fun to have her on the sideline although I like her on the field better. I really think we took an upsetting situation and didn’t let it get us down. We rose to the challenge.”
North Penn coach Shannon McCrackin on the game: “I was proud of our team as we played two top opponents in Wilson and CB West back to back. In addition, we had to make some adjustments as we are missing a couple of key starters. The kids filled the spots well and played tough all over the field. Unfortunately, we were unable to finish the ball over the goal line or convert on penalty corners tonight. A few shots were just wide of the post.
–Props: “Midfielders Laura Albert, Devon Crowley, and Ashleigh Barwis played well in transition from defense to offense and forward Kylie Barwis was all over the field creating offensive opportunities.”
Up next: Central Bucks West (11-2, 7-0 SOL) will host Abington in a non-league game for Senior Recognition Night Wednesday. North Penn will host Central Bucks South on Monday (7 pm).

Tessa Walls scored on a ball of the goalie’s pad four minutes into the second quarter, breaking a scoreless tie and giving the Titans a lead they would not lose.
Ella Marchesi turned a pass from Kaeli VanDerSluis during corner play into a goal to send the Titans into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
East’s Josie Lauro scored just over a minute into the third quarter, and that 2-1 score stood until senior Ella Haag scored on a strong individual effort in the fourth quarter.
The Titans held an advantage in shots (15-9) and corners (11-4). South goalie Nora McQueen was credited with seven saves. Sophia Kraft had a defensive save for the Titans.

Central Bucks South coach Kelli Chioffe on the game: “We are very pleased with today’s win. Today’s quote for the huddle was – ‘She believed she could, so she did.’ They most certainly believed it and accomplished just that. They have been fighting hard and playing great together the past few weeks. Our offense did a fantastic job of getting shots off in the circle today.
“CB East is well coached, and they never gave up. They had us on our heels and didn’t let up the entire game.”
–The scoring: “Tessa Walls started the scoring when she received an initial goalie save close to the end-line and threw it back into the cage to get us on the scoreboard. Forward Kaeli VanDerSluis was able to draw some corners for us today and had an assist on one of those corners from an Ella Marchesi rebound goal.
“In the final quarter, Ella Haag took the ball from our own 20-yard line and dribbled up field into the circle and shot a rock into the far side of the goal cage to give us that extra insurance
“Goalkeeper Nora McQueen came up big for us today, making some crucial saves.”

Cameron Landis scored just over a minute after Draper to put the Panthers on top 3-1, but Mullen turned a pass from Annabelle Deacon into a goal for the 3-2 final.
Hatters’ goalie Mia Fisher kept the Hatters in the game, turning away 23 shots in a standout effort.

“This was a team win with both teams battling and not giving up until the end of the game.”
Hatboro-Horsham assistant coach Nicole Miletto on the game: “It was a good game at Quakertown tonight. The girls played hard but ran out of time.”

In the second quarter, Kerns scored with an assist from Katie Guarino, and the Colonials took a 4-1 lead into halftime.

Plymouth Whitemarsh coach Charise Halteman on the game: “It was kind of a wild game in some ways. We scored two goals within the first five minutes of the game. For our team, that was huge – not just because of getting the win, but we’ve really been struggling to score even in games where we feel like we’re controlling the pace of play and we have good offensive statistics. We’re just not getting goals. That’s how we felt against Quakertown (a 2-0 loss) last week. It was just huge for us to get early goals. That was something we were working on at practice.
“I felt we played a good team game in a lot of different ways that we were attacking and trying to score.”
–Standout Trojan: “Cami Lutte scored all three of their goals. Cami’s just a special player. She makes defender miss and makes the goalkeeper second guess herself.”
–Props: “Bridget Fullerton had three goals today. She’s my right forward, and we’ve been struggling to score, and she’s part of that. She really had good game, really found ways to finish and scored some nice goals, so that was exciting to see her do that.
“Gracie Kerns played really well. She had two goals. Emily Dobrowolski, my center mid, did a really nice job, and Hadley Blake, who’s my defensive center mid, and they really held down the middle of the field. Overall, it was just a good team game, a lot of good decision making. We saw a lot of nice things from our team today.”

Olivia Conte set the tone for the game, scoring back-to-back goals in the first quarter – both with Danielle Wilson assists – to spot the Lions a 2-0 lead.
The Lions took that 2-0 lead into the fourth quarter when Abby Varghese scored with a Danielle Wilson assist.

Upper Moreland coach Pam Remmey on the game: “(Our) team started with energy and was doing an awesome job competing with New Hope. Then with two minutes left in the first quarter, our defense had a breakdown when they thought an offensive foul had occurred in the circle and reacted to that, but after the no-call, NHS scored. Then New Hope drew another corner with time running out in the first quarter and the striker (Olivia Conte) hit a bullet shot to make it 2-0.
“As play continued, the Bears’ defense led by Kelly Bates, Izzy Duncan, Addi Gans and Julia Gallen kept New Hope from taking shots on goalie Addi Hurley. Hurley is our vocal leader in the circle, and she worked to direct her circle defenders to take away New Hope’s scoring opportunities. Due to her leadership, Hurley only had to make eight saves with the Lions in the Bears’ circle multiple times.”
–Props: “Bridget Hess and Olivia Torres were dynamic in the midfield, getting the ball up to the attack. Melissa Torpey, Kyleigh Convey and Ella Gould used their stickwork to get into New Hope’s circle. They got several corners but could not score. Off the bench, freshmen Hannah Gardner, Taylor Pagano and Harper Richmond keep developing and playing well for the Bears.”
