UPPER DUBLIN 3, WISSAHICKON 2 (OT)
Emma Kate Powell connected on a penalty stroke in the final minutes of overtime to propel the Flying Cardinals to the dramatic win.
“It’s exciting coming off a week with North Penn, PW and Wissahickon all in one week,” coach Heather Boyer said. “I had subbed in one of my midfielders to get fresh legs, Peyton Kullmann, and she did a nice job carrying the ball down the left side and then crossed it over.
“We were attacking the far end, and I couldn’t see it, but it looked like either the ball had crossed over and somebody had prevented it. There was a lot of body contact going on too. I do think it was an intentional prevention of allowing the ball to cross the goal line.”
For Powell, it was the first and only penalty stroke she’s ever taken in a game in her entire career.
“Emma Kate has been playing sweeper for us the last few days – she’s primarily our center back/sweeper, and that’s where she was 7v7,” Boyer said. “Not only does she have a very strong stroke that has great lift to it, she also probably was the least fatigued on the field at the time. She has the right personality to be in a situation like that, and she nailed it.
“She handled it very, very well. I was really proud of her for her composure. That was a big spot to be in. You feel bad for the Wissahickon goalie (Meghan Reilly) who played a great game. There was nothing the goalie did wrong. Emma Kate hit it into the high part of the cage – it actually hit the high crossbar in the back. There’s not much you could do to stop it, no matter what you tried. Their goalie definitely made a great effort at it.”
The win avenged a 2-0 loss at the hands of the Trojans earlier this season.
“Wissahickon is doing very well,” Boyer said. “It was definitely a little lopsided in terms of shots and corners, but it didn’t feel like that in the game.
“They’re very aggressive, and they have a very offensive mindset. They’re quick on the ball, they do a lot of good things in transition, and they connect with each other very well. I told the girls yesterday at practice and again today – ‘If you want to extend your season beyond Oct. 16, this is a must win game. You have to win today. There’s no other alternative, so you need to go out and set the tone early,’ and they did a good job with that.”
It was the Flying Cardinals who struck first when Jenn McCarry (Ryann Kullmann assist) scored with 14 minutes remaining in the first half. Two minutes later, Hannah Havrilla (Steph Scoma assist) scored the equalizer for the Trojans.
Eleven minutes into the second half, the Trojans were awarded a penalty strike, and Havrilla converted. Five minutes later, Lydia Casey scored an unassisted goal to knot the score.
The Cardinals held a decided advantage in shots (21-6) and corners (13-3).
“They played really, really hard today,” Boyer said. “A lot of them were realizing if we are fortunate enough to make the top 16 (in districts), I don’t think we’ll be lucky enough to have a top eight finish and get a home game, so this was their last home game today.
“There are some kids who are looking ahead and realize that. I think that brought a little bit of emotion as they start to see some of their milestones in their senior year come to a close. We have really good senior leadership, and we have younger kids in that sophomore grade that are working hard and want to play because the seniors are good leaders and are good kids to be around. It makes for a nice atmosphere.”
Upper Dublin is 12th in the latest District One 5A rankings and Wissahickon is 10th.
Upper Dublin (8-7-1, 7-5-1 SOL) will travel to William Tennent for a non-league game Monday, and Wissahickon (9-6, 8-5) will host Council Rock North in a non-league game Friday.
