Check out the recaps for SOL field hockey teams in action Friday.
SOL Colonial Division
SOUDERTON 6, NORTH PENN 3
Hannah Cornes had herself a busy day on the left post.
The freshman forward – on the heels of scoring a goal against CB West two days earlier – connected for a hat trick to lead the Indians in Friday’s rivalry game.
“Hannah Cornes did a fantastic job on the left post,” Souderton coach Sue Casciato said. “She didn’t do anything spectacular – she just got her stick on the ball on the left post, and we’ve struggled to find anyone to do that this year. Between Ava Shaw, Lauren Frye and Ang Borisow, we have beautiful crosses from the right side, but we’ve struggled to do anything with them.”
Cornes certainly solved that problem on Friday, but Casciato still has some concerns.
“We’re giving up too many easy goals where teams literally just run past us and score a goal,” the Indians’ coach said. “But I was pleased to come away with a win today.
“North Penn always plays us tough, and today was no exception. They have very good team speed and did a great job with their ‘in-out’ passing combinations. I was pleased that we had quite a few players involved in our scoring today.”
Cornes (Borisow assist) put the Indians on the scoreboard less than four minutes into the game. The Knights evened the score six minutes into the second quarter on a goal by Catherine McGeehan with a Caleigh Sperling assist. With 24 seconds remaining in the half, Ava Shaw scored an unassisted goal to send the Indians into the intermission with a 2-1 lead.
“She brought the ball on the end line, and the goalie met her,” Casciato said of Shaw’s goal. “She actually pulled the ball back and lifted it past the goalie.
“We started very quick – we probably should have had three goals in the first five minutes, but then we kind of fizzled, and I think at that point they were probably outplaying us, so to go to halftime with a lead that I’m not 100 percent sure we deserved was big.”
Just over four minutes into the second half, Cornes turned a Lauren Frye cross from the right side into a goal and a 3-1 Souderton lead. Sophomore Tatum Andrews also got a stick on the ball in the circle.
“In the second half, Lauren Frye definitely had a good day,” Casciato said.
Ava Jones scored with an assist from Julia Blair, and then Borisow connected on an unassisted goal to put the Indians on top 5-1 after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, the Knights used goals by Ashleigh Barwis (Sperling assist) and Laura Albert to pull to within 5-3 with 5:48 remaining. Cornes put to rest any thoughts of a comeback with her third goal of the afternoon with three minutes remaining.
“The score doesn’t reflect the play from the Knights today,” NP coach Shannon McCracken said. “The first half was dominated by North Penn’s strong passing and quick touches on the ball.
“Unfortunately, (we) were unable to capitalize on early offensive opportunities, and Souderton was able to score early on limited opportunities. That opened things up for Souderton, and they executed offensively.
“Annabelle Smink, Melissa Sessler and Laura Albert had a great game defensively for the Knights against a tough Souderton attack. Sisters Grace and Catherin McGeehan and Caleigh Sperling led the way offensively for the Knights, setting up the attack and forcing fouls in the circle.”
The Indians held an edge in shots (13-11) and corners (8-7). NP goalie Kiley Moister had six saves while Souderton’s Meredith DeMarzio had seven. Jocelyn Franek had a defensive save for the Knights.
“I am so proud of the way we played,” McCracken said. “We played truly as a team, possessed the ball well, and after some fine tuning, we are excited to move into next week’s games.”
Souderton (7-0, 6-0 SOL) will be on the road at Harry S Truman Monday, and North Penn (4-3, 4-2) will travel to Neshaminy on Monday.
