Non-league crossover
WISSAHICKON 3, NESHAMINY 2
In a battle of division leaders, it was the Trojans – thanks to a goal by Carly Lehman late in the fourth quarter – eking out the win over the Redskins. Lexi Pak – on the baseline – found Lehman at the stroke mark for the game-winner.
Early on, the Trojans appeared to be in command, opening up a 2-0 first-quarter lead after goals by Riley Ball (Pak assist) and Cami Lutte, but the Redskins battled back.
Ava Arbakov scored in the second quarter to make it a 2-1 game at halftime, and in the third quarter, Kasey Rieger scored the equalizer, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
Scoring Summary
1st quarter
Riley Ball (W) from Lexi Pak (1-0)
Cami Lutte (W) (2-0)

Wissahickon coach LeeAnn Marchesi on the win: “This was huge. Our girls are starting to really believe in themselves as much as I believe in them, so the mental aspect of the game – trusting yourself first and trusting your teammates second and moving together – has been something I’ve been saying since the beginning. They’re seeing it, and they’re feeding off each other. For it to come together is really pretty. It’s them believing in themselves, which is the biggest part of the game.”
“I have been saying since the beginning that we can be unstoppable if we believe that we are. I think that this is just proof to anybody out there who’s wondering about us – we are a force, and we play really beautiful hockey when we believe that we can. We’re resilient, and we’re gritty, but we’re also talented. We’re kind, and we like to spread the celebration around and feed off each other’s successes, so we’re trying to bring the team aspect back to the game. We have a lot of talent on the team as individuals, so seeing the way our talent can help out the talent of others has been a really beautiful process.”
–Spreading the scoring around: “We’ve been seeing that the last few games, and that has been so critical because it’s not just been one person. When it’s not just one person, that’s when the concept of team is more powerful. We don’t just have one scorer that can be taken away by man-marking or double teaming. We really have so many potential goal scorers in the circle that they have to worry about all of us.”
–Providing a spark: “Lexi Pak did beautifully for us – two assists today. She’s someone that has been like a rock for us. Sometimes a starter and sometimes coming off the bench, depending on the day or injuries or illness or how things are going at practice. She’s someone who would go unnoticed if I wasn’t constantly reminding her that I see her. She’s more of a quiet personality. It’s nice to see her shine, and we’ve really been seeing it. It’s been fun.”
–Significance of win: “When we made the schedule, we really looked at who we could bring as strong competition in the regular season. That’s a very intentional decision between the athletic director and myself. When we look at the schedule out of season knowing our crossover games were our opportunity to have a stronger regular season – it meant the potential for closer games. We had two losses early in the season against really great teams, but they taught us so much coming into this part of the season, so now it’s about continuing our belief, now it’s about continuing even we’re tired by pushing through and having that belief when you played two games already in a week, so coming off two weeks of a whole lot of games and continuing to believe in ourselves is going to be our next hurdle. Having such a rough schedule and playing better teams is making us a better team as well. I’m really glad we were able to get a team like Neshaminy on our schedule, and we play CB West next week. Right now, we’re just on to the next game – we have North Penn Friday, and they’re going to be aggressive, so this week was three pretty good games. To see the girls stepping up the way that they are in these games has been what’s helping them see their own talent and their own value to the team and their own strengths as an individual and as a unit.”
Up next: Wissahickon (7-2-1, 4-1 SOL) will host North Penn Friday, and Neshaminy (7-3, 5-0) will host New Hope-Solebury Tuesday in a non-league crossover game.

Gracie Kerns (PW) from Sammy Callan 10:37 (3-1)
PW coach Charise Halteman on the game: “PW and Council Rock North played a competitive game this afternoon, ending in a 3-1 victory for the Colonials. The game was tightly contested throughout the first quarter, but early in the second quarter Gracie Kerns was able to finish a play from Sammy Callan to give PW a 1-0 lead. Callan would find the back of the cage midway through the quarter to put the Colonials on top 2-0.
“CR North responded right before the half with a goal of their own. The game stayed tight through the third quarter, until Gracie Kerns was able to finish on a well-executed corner play from Sammy Callan. The PW defense stayed strong throughout the second half and limited CR North’s ability to get shots off.”
CR North coach Jules Singer: “It was another strong performance from the girls. Plymouth Whitemarsh is a talented team, and we held our own. I am proud of the girls for their effort through the whole 60 minutes, and we can only build going forward. We had a flexible playing style today due to an injury.

CB East coach Emma Rosenthal on the win: “Our goal tonight was to play as one complete unit for the whole 60 minutes, and I really felt like we did that. Upper Moreland’s goalkeepers were great, so I’m really proud of us for collecting rebounds and finishing. Our ball movement looked great, and the scoring was well spread out.”
–Props: “Great play tonight in the midfield by Sydney Lafferty, Anna Daly, and Aly McIsaac. On the forward line Brynn Bonargo had a breakout game and was joined in great ball movement by Emma Weisel, Ava Firely, Emerson McFeely, and Sophia Gerken.”
Upper Moreland coach Pam Remmey on the game: “The game started off with the Bears on their heels as a strong Patriot attack kept the ball inside the circle for the first few minutes and scored quickly. Upper Moreland defenders Kelly Bates and Izzy Duncan adjusted quickly and played solid, communicating with their teammates to get the Patriots scoring under control.
“In the second half, play was more even. The Bears got some offensive push from freshman mid Bridget Hess, and forwards Melissa Torpey and Kyleigh Convey at wings worked hard to take the ball up the sidelines.
“We were satisfied that we only had six defensive corners against a very aggressive CB East team. We have been working on limiting corners, and our backs did a great job with that today. Addi Gans has filled in well for an injured player and continues to grow as a part of our solid defense. Goalie Addi Hurley had 10 saves, while Ash Conrad tacked on another.”

Abington coach Janine Larr on the win: “It was a great team win today for us today. Every player on Abington’s team stepped up to help secure another win. We were struggling with injuries early on in the season, but now that everyone is healthy, we have been playing really great hockey. I was really happy to get some offense going in the first quarter, today, as we have been struggling to find the back of the cage. The girls worked hard on implementing a lot of things we have been working on in practice, and it helped pay off with a nice win.”
–The scoring: “Junior forward Brooke Dougherty scored the first goal of the game at 7:59 in the first quarter, off a beautiful shot from the left side of the cage. Junior center forward Maeve Link quickly followed with another unassisted goal two minutes later to put the Ghosts up 2-0 at the end of the first quarter. Junior forward Janice Coonahan then added to her goal tally for the year by hustling for a loose ball in front of Bensalem’s goalie to put the score at 3-0 at the half. Coonahan then added another goal at the 11:25 mark of the third quarter, off an assist by Link, to put the game away 4-0.
“All three goalies – senior Caitlin Murcar, junior Palmina D’Angelo and sophomore Keely Gallagher – stepped up throughout the game to help preserve the shutout.”
Bensalem coach Gary Kubik on the game: “Abington kept us on our heels all game. Their block-up defense was on point; we just were not able to penetrate up the field. We had a few good runs up the field by Giuliana Pasquarella and were able win a few corners but could not finish on one. We’ll get back to it tomorrow with some film work, look at what we can improve upon, and come back out with more intensity on Friday.”

Lower Moreland coach Janet Lutter on the game: “This is the toughest week of the season with the SOL division crossover games. Playing a school the size of North Penn is a challenge for a much smaller Lower Moreland. I commend our team for keeping their heads held high until the final buzzer sounded. Goalie Jordyn Mac hee had 26 saves today. All 11 players on the field worked hard defensively to stop North Penn. We will surely learn from our mistakes today and use what we learned to improve in the second half of our season. We play at Lower Merion on Friday and look to bounce back then.”

PENNSBURY 2, UPPER DUBLIN 1
(Article submitted by Pennsbury field hockey)
On the road again…
Pennsbury took to the highway to face the Upper Dublin Cardinals for their second road trip out of three games they will travel to during this jam-packed week. These two teams had not met in the six years Traci Curtis has been head coach, so there was a ton of mystery surrounding the matchup.
“We have done a lot of work on entering each game in isolation without focusing on an overload of information – whether we know the team or not,” Curtis said. “That can be distracting from staying true to ourselves. We are really proud of how the girls are intentional about preparing for each step as it comes and going into games playing our style of hockey.”
Although the Falcons got off to a very sloppy start, they slowly but surely began to connect and fall into step as a united force. The Cardinals worked hard and did not allow PHS to finish on several opportunities early on. The first quarter ended locked 0-0, and both teams were fighting hard. The second quarter was much of the same with Pennsbury dominating offensively but continuing to struggle to get the ball in the cage. There were still two goose eggs on the scoreboard at halftime.
“Our coaching staff was frustrated with the lack of finishing in the circle,” said Curtis. “We feel like we’ve done almost everything possible to prepare them for scoring, but ultimately, it comes down to who wants it most, who can focus, and who can rise up, bring their team together and get the job done.”
The Falcons were still searching for the cage in the third quarter, but never found it during those fifteen minutes. Unfortunately, The Cardinals did as they took advantage of a major Pennsbury defensive breakdown and connected to go up 1-0 with four minutes left.
“All it takes is one moment like that and you can find yourself clawing your way out of a hole,” Curtis said. “Our defense is really strong and doing an incredible job, but in that one series, they completely deteriorated, and it led to the goal.
“During the break before the final quarter we talked about having 15 minutes to walk away with a win and how that is really an eternity considering teams had scored on us in nine seconds. We just needed to take a breath, relax, and understand what patient hockey looked like.”
Ten minutes into the final quarter, the Falcons found a way to answer back and tie the game 1-1. Sophomore Regan Rodriguez did the work to earn a penalty corner, and sophomore teammate Cailyn Reilly finished the job by slamming a solid shot straight into the back of the cage from the initial insert by sophomore Ryan Burdette.
With five minutes left in regulation, there was an eternity for one of the teams to strike again. Upper Dublin had a strong chance with three minutes left when they earned an offensive corner against the Falcons. The moment moved in slow motion as UD got a shot off to the right post, and another UD player deflected the shot perfectly toward goal. The ball got behind Pennsbury’s goalie, but sophomore Payton Worth, who was playing the post position, had an incredible defensive save to shut down the opportunity and save her team from going down 2-1.
The Falcons did not have an answer before the final regulation buzzer, forcing the game into overtime. This was the first overtime situation for Pennsbury. It was an exciting first six minutes as the battle of the birds continued back and forth, keeping each team on its toes.
With four minutes left in overtime, Abby Iacona worked her magic to gain possession for the Falcons. She passed the ball to Ryan Burdette, and it almost got intercepted, but Burdette was able to reach and win the 50/50 ball. Iacona almost got her own pass back, but stepped off so she did not interfere with her teammate’s effort, allowing Burdette to complete a pass into the circle to Ava Jordan waiting on the left side of the cage. Jordan collected the ball, adjusted her feet and body, and was able to slam it right into an open cage after catching the goalie stepping out too far.
“It was a united effort for sure,” Curtis said. “Iacona left her heart on the field, creating and cultivating offense for her teammates. Burdette’s reach to gain control of the ball was vital, and her pass inside was spot on. Jordan was in the right place and settled the ball beautifully to get the shot off when she did.
“We were not happy with the start of the game, but we came around and ended in an amazing way. We saw their hearts today and the desire to win was palpable. That changes the game for us. We have turned a corner and refuse to go back.”
Outstanding play also by Angelina Kenney, Jacqueline Sullivan, and Avalee Shumski.
The Falcons (6-3, 2-3 SOL) will travel on Friday to Springfield Township High School, looking to finish out the week with another win in the books.
Upper Dublin (2-7-1, 2-2-0) will host Central Bucks East Tuesday in a non-league crossover game.
