SOL Patriot Division
PENNSBURY 2, NESHAMINY 1
The stakes were high when Pennsbury traveled to Neshaminy Wednesday night. With a win over the ‘Skins in the initial meeting between the two teams, the Falcons held a one-game lead over the defending champions in the division standings. Wednesday’s hard-fought win solidifies the Falcons claim to the top spot. They hold a two-game lead in the loss column with just four division games remaining.
The two teams exchanged goals with Neshaminy taking a 1-0 lead early in the second quarter only to see Abby Iacona turned a Ryan Burdette pass into the equalizer.
That 1-1 tie stood until Burdette found the cage one minute into the fourth quarter for a goal that stood as the game-winner.

Neshaminy coach Jamie Pinto:
“This was obviously not the outcome we wanted tonight, but I can’t fault our effort. We battled tonight. We played hard until the end. We improved since our last meeting. We have some tough games coming up and will continue to work together as a team, learn from our mistakes, and improve.”
Up next: Pennsbury will travel to Germantown Academy for a non-league game Friday, and Neshaminy will be on the road at North Penn for a non-league contest.

Twenty days have passed since Pennsbury and Neshaminy’s first meeting at Falcon Field when PHS came out on top 2-1 in a weather delayed game that spanned two nights. A lot has happened in those twenty days as PHS and Neshaminy have both beaten all other Patriot Division peers in first round contests, and they each work to fine tune and transform as the season moves along. Neither team arrived looking the same as they did earlier in September and that is what makes each contest unique and highly anticipated.
The setting of this particular highly anticipated game was the Skins’ stadium under the lights after an intense JV battle that ended in a 2-2 tie. The clear skies and chill in the air made it the perfect fall night for a great field hockey game. It certainly was no secret that this was not just a regular season league game – there was much more at stake as these two teams sit at the top of the Patriot division in a fierce race toward clinching the SOL. Neshaminy was seeking redemption for the loss at Falcon Field, and Pennsbury was out to prove that this was in fact their time. Since Traci Curtis took over the PHS program in 2019 her teams have never beaten Neshaminy until twenty days ago. In addition, the Skins have won the SOL seven years in a row – Curtis’ entire tenure thus far. Those stats hung in the air blanketing a palpable pressure on both benches.
This was no regular game.
Pennsbury senior captains Abby Iacona and Ryan Burdette set the tone from the start with a breakaway combination at the 13-minute mark that put Iacona with the ball right in front of the Neshaminy goalie. Iacona’s attempt was saved as was Regan Rodriguez’s rebound shot. The NHS goalie was locked in and sent the message loud and clear in that moment – it was going to be hard to get the ball by her. The first quarter was scoreless – each team had one penalty corner, but PHS led in possession and had two shots on goal to Neshaminy’s one.
Coach Curtis summed the quarter up, “We were really happy with how we came out ready from the whistle. We dominated possession and were playing our passing game. We had really strong sticks that were denying their big ball style, and that helped us to stay confident and poised in our play. It was great to see the connectedness and communication as well.”
The second quarter started with the Falcons earning a penalty corner in the first two minutes. They were unable to connect but continued to show strength in attacking opportunities. One minute later, there was a crazy turn of events as one of Neshaminy’s players broke her stick on a hit out of their defending circle. Play stopped to remedy the situation and resulted in a bully at the spot of the play. Neshaminy gained possession, and Chloe Brison sent a strong hit, threading the needle into their attacking circle to her teammate who received it cleanly in front of the goal and shot it past PHS goalie Amelia Fernandes to put the Skins up 1-0 with 12:37 left to play in the half.
The rest of the quarter was a battle all over the field with the Falcons continuing to win the possession game, earning four penalty corners but coming up empty on all of them. They led in shots as well but were not connecting…until they did. In perfect PHS style, senior Cailyn Reilly made a great step to the ball intercepting it
reverse stick. She used her teammate, fellow senior Payton Worth, as a backward wall pass – Worth sent it back to Reilly on the left sideline to beat the defender. Reilly passed it inside to awaiting senior Ryan Burdette, who ran onto the ball and weaved her way toward the circle. Burdette put the ball perfectly into the circle to hit Abby Iacona on the move, and Iacona stayed low, strong, and in motion to put it past NHS goalie, tying the game 1-1 with 2:24 left in the half. The stadium erupted, and the Falcons were holding true to their RELENTLESS mentality. The score remained tied 1-1 going into the half. The fans were in for a treat.
“We were playing great hockey and really staying poised and positive,” said Curtis. “When we use our stick-to-stick passing combos, we are very successful and the girls were doing a great job of avoiding the temptation to play the big ball game like Neshaminy and just holding strong to our style. Our goal to tie it was proof of that with so many girls getting a touch and contributing to the success. It was such smart hockey and makes us so proud.”
The third quarter was scoreless but not without excitement and tension. With ten minutes left, a Pennsbury player received a yellow card and was out for five minutes. The orange and black didn’t back down and held Neshaminy throughout the card, disallowing them to get offensive pressure despite being a player down.
“That stand was incredible and a testament to the heart of this team and how well we banded together tonight,” said Curtis. “When one goes down, we go with her and do whatever it takes to pick up the slack.”
Each team had a couple of penalty corners and shots on goal, but the 1-1 tie was unbroken going into the final fifteen minutes.
One minute into the final quarter, the Falcons made a statement. Once again, a shared goal starting from the backfield and ending up at the opposite end in the back of the cage.
“Senior defender, Payton Worth had a free hit coming out,” Curtis said. “She passed wide to junior Leila Curtis, who sent it up the line to sophomore Lilly Alon. Abby Iacona picked it up after it bounced around off sticks and carried it upfield where she hit Ryan Burdette on the outside. Burdette weaved through several NHS defenders and connected for the go-ahead goal unassisted.
“Iacona and Burdette operate in such harmony with one another offensively. It is so awesome to watch them decide when to pass, when to shoot, when to share, when to go, when to cut. They just know one another’s rhythm, and it creates such great hockey moments.”
The Falcons were up 2-1 but it was still anyone’s game with 14 minutes left.
There was still A LOT of game left to play, but Pennsbury could exhale a tiny bit and now get into the details of holding onto the lead and finishing out the battle. This is where they shine with a stellar defense having a heart that beats as one. With each tick of the clock, Pennsbury seemed to get stronger and stronger, stifling Neshaminy’s opportunities at every turn. No more goals were scored for the remainder of the game.
“We finished out this game with force and smarts. Cailyn Reilly iced the ball with 30 seconds left, helping to secure the win,” said Curtis. “Every single player on that field knew what their job was and they executed with authority fueled by a desire to play for something bigger than themselves.”
The Falcons held strong until the final seconds expired, walking away with a 2-1 victory and sweeping the Skins in league play.
“Neshaminy was a different team than we faced the first time,” Curtis said. “They make you earn every moment
and force you to play the best hockey you’ve ever played. They are a team that drives your practice plans, makes you think about the way you approach the game, and dares you to be great. And tonight we were great.
“We are so proud of this group and very happy for our seniors who have been working toward this exact scenario for four years. It feels awesome to walk away from this field with the win, knowing we did it together. That includes our coaching staff who are incredible humans and work so hard to make this program great – Lori Riley, Lauren Gerth, and Beth Golder – they accept nothing less than excellence. We went from never beating Neshaminy in seven years, to beating them twice this season. I’d say that’s great progress. Our alums will be proud.
“Shout out to our goalie, Amelia Fernandes, who saved 5 of the 6 shots taken and helped us to win this game by protecting the cage the best she ever has.
“Tomorrow is a new day and we start fresh. We are not finished and will continue to work one day at a time to improve, fine tune, and keep writing our 2026 story.”
Pennsbury will travel to Germantown Academy on Friday for a non-league game.

Bensalem coach Gary Kubik:
–The game: “The Bensalem Owls flew into Truman stadium for a win today! The first matchup ended with a 7-0 win in a game that was just completed after a week-long weather suspension. Today, the Owls took off and never looked back.
“Abby Chueng started the scoring off with a putback off a corner from Paige Dando five minutes into the game. Leah Vorgity had back-to-back unassisted goals to close out the first and then to open the second quarter. Paige Dando scored a goal to add to her previous assist with an assist from Emma Welsford with 7:22 left in the second. Mollie Reilly scored back-to-back goals within two minutes of each other. The first was a beautiful run up the left side along the baseline and between the goalie’s pads. The second one was a lot easier when Kylie Blank did much of the hard work and shuttled a shot across the goal mouth to a waiting Reilly to hammer in.
“Lily Lenzinski got on the board when Tierney Sayers fed a ball across the net early on in the fourth quarter. Freshman Darcy Leslie got her first varsity goal when she spun in front of the cage and deposited it into the net unassisted to close out the scoring.
“We got a lot of players into the game today and spread the scoring over six different players and had four different players with assists. We moved the ball fairly well throughout the contest, and our defense was solid all the way through. We have an unselfish group of girls that support each other in every game. Hailey Fricke and freshman goaltender Gabby Thompson combined for the shutout.”

North Penn coach Shannon McCracken:
“It was a great team win tonight – we controlled the ball much of the game putting together nice passing sequences and playing 60 minutes of consistent team hockey. Our midfield played a strong game in the transition and did an excellent job of connecting with our forwards coming out of the defensive end. I am proud of our composure after Pennridge scored their first goal. We were able to answer back with a goal within five minutes on a penalty corner. Great team effort tonight to secure the win.”
Pennridge coach Chris Chookagian:
“The process is coming together. We keep growing each day, and each new contest is our best contest. We’re looking toward a Friday returning home to keep this momentum going after putting up the first goals of the season.”

“Great team effort tonight. It was important for us to get back on track after coming off two losses and to get the league win.
–Props: “Laney Hall, Margot Trask and Grace McGrath were stellar in the backfield. Lucy Smith controlled the middle of the field, helping to connect our lines in transition. Zola Morelli was a positive leader, keeping us on track and poised after two quarters of no scoring. And all the girls coming in off the bench brought fresh legs and energy to the game – Evelyn Knight with a great finishing goal to give us more padding in our lead. I am very happy with how we came to play tonight.”
:Central Bucks South coach Steph Bardell:
–The game: “When you have zero shots, it’s hard to score. We turned on the pressure in the fourth quarter and got our chances on the corners, but it was too little too late in a hard-fought game. We stayed disciplined, we moved quickly we just weren’t getting into the circle for the shots tonight.
“By the books it was a tilted game but that fourth quarter pressure is something we will build on and hope to face them again later this season.”
–Props: “I give big props to Ella Marchesi for a complete game and Jenna Butler for having breakthrough balls for our offense to run onto. We played as a team and have things to take away and learn as we enter our crossover games.
“Our defensive unit, led by Sophia Kraft, Hailey Finn, Ryann Vandersluis, and Grace Helsel saw many corners and were able to stop the progress; our goalkeepers saw good number of shots, Sophia Hurley (11), Nora McQueen (3).”

The Indians’ senior leadership was on full display in Wednesday’s win over the Patriots as three of the team’s four starting seniors accounted for both goals. The team’s fourth senior – Brooke Wagner – anchored the defense in the shutout.
Caylee DeSimone turned a Lexi Yanchunas pass into a goal in the opening moments of the second quarter, and that 1-0 lead stood until Autumn Wagner (Yanchunas assist) scored with three minutes remaining in regulation.
Sophomore Rylee DeSimone once again stood tall in goal, turning away all nine shots she faced to earn the shutout in the evenly-matched contest.

Souderton coach Sue Casiato:
–The game: “Tonight’s game with East was statistically very even, as was our last game with them. We were able to come away with a tough win due to some great play and leadership from our seniors. Our goalie – Rylee DeSimone – came up with some great saves on a couple occasions in the second half. She came up really big against West, and she’s really coming into her own.
“Things don’t get any easier the next few weeks as we face some very talented non-league opponents.”
–Seniors lead the way: “Our four senior starters – Brooke and Autumn Wagner, Lexi Yanchunas and Kaylee DeSimone – have pretty much been carrying us all season. Brooke is playing center back, and she’s getting a lot of touches. She’s definitely our stopper in the back, and she puts more miles in than anybody on the field.”

Neither squad could find the cage in Wednesday’s tightly contested division game, and the two teams were forced to settle for a tie.
Abington goalie Keeley Gallagher recorded 18 saves.
Wissahickon coach Hannah Havrilla:
–The game: “We had many opportunities to score today and dominated offensively for the majority of the game. However, we just failed to put one in the back of the net. There is plenty to take away from this game. We are happy that both of our goalies had a shutout and that the game stayed primarily on our offensive end, but we need to be able to finish our opportunities.”
–Props: “I would like to recognize Siena Le. She stepped up huge defensively today, staying tight on her mark and making great steps in the midfield.
“We relied a lot on our bench today, so props to Marianna Martin and Kate Pulini. They stepped up in new positions, were ready to go when needed, and made smart plays.
“Lastly, I would like to shout out Ally Maier and Addison Arnott. They played through the whistle today and made great attacking plays going forward. They really focused on what we have been working on in practice, especially going with speed and taking quick free hits.”
Abington coach Janine Larr:
–The game: “We had a great battle with Wissahickon today! Our girls came out and things really clicked and it showed in every aspect of our game. Everything we have been working on, the girls really executed today. They were making great passes and stepping to every ball and marking well in the circle.
“It was a total team effort today from start to finish. We had players really step up and leave everything on the field up until the last minute of overtime. It was exciting to see everything come together after a tough start to our season, due to some injuries. We are looking forward to building off today’s game and continuing this type of play for the second half of our season!”
–Props: “Defensive mids Gwen Judge and Morgan Gillette were all over the field and key in helping get the ball out of our circle and up the field, while senior offensive mid, Addie Harrington, also had a great game and made some key passes to help our offensive push up the field. Senior goalie Keely Gallagher was excellent in goal, recording 18 saves in the game, with the help of great play from our defensive line of MaryCate Cairnes, Delcy O’Hagan, and Charlotte Melcher.”

Tonight was a night to celebrate our Upper Moreland seniors! And each came to play their best game yet this season! Senior Kaelyn Ashley started off the scoring with an unassisted goal in the first quarter to put the Bears ahead. In the 2nd quarter, Cheltenham’s Huynn put in a goal to even the score. The score remained tied through most of the 3rd quarter, even though the Bears put a tremendous amount of pressure on Cheltenham’s keeper
. Olivia Torres and MJ Reilly kept getting the ball into the circle with great stickwork and hard drives from outside the circle, but we just couldn’t get it by their goalkeeper.
Cheltenham’s goalie (Abdul) had 14 saves in the first half, turning away shot after shot. Finally in the third quarter, MJ Reilly sent a hard pass into the circle, and senior Gianna Jones scored to put the Bears ahead.
Right after the quarter break, MJ Reilly took control again and rocketed a shot across the cage which Soph Riehle swept past the goalkeeper for the insurance goal. But Huynn kept playing well, turning away 14 more Bears’ shots in the seconds half. Taylor Pagano was able to get a shot by her to make the score 4-1. Then Olivia Torres put a shot towards goal and the fourth senior of the night – Sekai Bell scored the final goal!
Senior Charlotte Russo, our only senior defender, played aggressively and reliably to get the ball out of our defensive zone. Bridget Hess played all over the field, getting back on defense and pushing the ball up the field with excellent free hits. Gianna Morrison continues to showcase her athleticism and natural ability by getting the ball by her opponents.
One highlight of the game was when all three Ashley sisters played together on the field. Senior Kaelyn Ashley, who scored tonight, played alongside younger sisters Kendra and Tirzah. When they were all in the game together, Tirzah and Kendra really played well for their first time on the varsity level, and Kendra almost scored! As a parent myself, I thought it would be a really cool experience for the family to have them all out there playing on the same field.”
