Non-league
CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 5, MOUNT ST. JOSEPH ACADEMY 3
A short-handed West squad earned the much-needed non-league win over the visiting Magic at War Memorial Field on Monday night.
“I think it’s a really huge win just because they’re coming together as a team,” coach Courtney Lepping said. “It was just really neat to see them – they were pumped up together, they were excited, they were working together. They were passing. They weren’t on their heels and they didn’t back down.
“Our big thing is ‘Finish It.’ That’s our motto, and this was a moment where we finally went out there and did that defensively. This is a really big team win. Every member of the team was a part of the win, which we haven’t always had.”
Making the win especially significant was the fact that the Bucks were without three players – including first team all-league forward Cadera Smith, left back Chloe Miller-Russo and reserve Taylor Levont.
Last Thursday, in their first game without Smith at Souderton, the Bucks watched a 3-1 halftime lead slip away and were forced to settle for a 3-3 tie.
“That was the big difference in that game – trying to play without Cadera,” Lepping said. “Tonight they played really, really well together.
“The way we play with Cardera is a little bit different style. If you were to graph how she runs around on the field – no one can replicate that. She just has this idea of where to cut, when to cut, when to stay high, when to go low, and I’m not telling her that, so it’s a little bit of a different offense that we had to get used to without her.”
The Bucks, according to Lepping, came out swinging and got on the board first when Kaci Murray connected during a scramble in front of the cage at the 22:23 mark. The Mount answered with a goal less than two minutes later, but the Bucks responded with a goal by Ryan Murray off a deflection to go on top 2-1 at the 19:34 mark.
Taylor Mason’s unassisted goal midway through the half gave the Bucks a 3-1 lead but the Mount answered with the first of Natalie McNamara’s two goals to make it a 3-2 game at halftime.
Boylan’s goal during corner play gave the Bucks a 4-2 lead, but McNamara found the cage at the end of a breakaway to make it a 4-3 game at the 25:36 mark. That score stood for the next 25 minutes with both teams having their opportunities. With less than 30 seconds remaining, Ryan Murray earned a corner, and Boylan hit pay dirt, putting an exclamation point on the important win.
“This was a game that was awesome because every single player on the field had a moment where they owned a play,” Lepping said. “Usually for us, it can be one or two that stand out. Today, obviously, Bryn stood out with her shots and finishing on those corners, but every single member of the team had a moment where they had to step up and they did.
“I think we had four or five defensive saves in this game, and my goalie – Laura Kubit – was on fire. She had (nine) saves on 14 shots. She played out of her mind in the second half.”
Lepping also lauded the efforts of Boylan and Ryan Murray and tipped her hat to the Mount.
“Mount’s hits are incredible,” the Bucks’ coach said. “I wish I could teach every one of my players how to hit like that. They’re just beautiful hits, and their speed – that’s their main strength. When they’re on the ball, they’re faster than you without the ball. They’re just very fast.
“Hopefully, this is a win that will carry us through.”
