CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 1, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 0
It took close to a month to complete, but a game between the sister schools that was halted due to lightning after one quarter on August 30 was completed on Wednesday night, and it was the visiting Bucks eking out the hard-fought win.
“I can’t tell you the last time we had a victory over East,” West coach Dave DeAngelis said. “Anytime we play one of our sister schools, records do not mean anything. It was a hard-fought and entertaining match from the perspective of – we’ve been able to attack pretty relentlessly in all of our matches. CB East’s defense did a fantastic job trying to hold the line and doing some counter rushes.”
Play resumed at the start of the second quarter, and the Bucks broke a scoreless tie with 8:35 remaining in the third quarter. Lily Cosner drove the ball into the circle, Kendall Seigle deflected it to Aida Ieurubino finished it off for the score.
“It was a lot of back and forth, really good hockey from both programs,” DeAngelis said. “Our forwards and midfielders are very cohesive, but our defensive line stepped up many times in the passing lanes where East was trying to get it out that we caused disruption.
“It was our defensive line that had a good match. They played a good match collectively.”
Comprising the Bucks’ defensive unit were Bronwen Rouse, Lucy Damsker and Reagan Levant.
West held and advantage in shots and corners (13-1).
“This group is really well conditioned, and you see it – they do attack,” DeAngelis said. “We’re not done. We’re going to try to continue to improve in areas we need to, but it’s been very enjoyable watching this group of student-athletes.”
East coach Emma Rosenthal was pleased with her team’s performance.
“It’s odd to finish up the first game of the season at the end of September, but the continued game was just as intense as the first quarter in August,” the Patriots’ coach said. “I am extremely proud of our play tonight- especially our defense and the extraordinary play of Audra Szymborski (17 saves).
“Sienna Valenti, Anna Daly, and Avery McCann held it down, and West was able to capitalize while we were playing down from a green card. West is a great team and we’re looking forward to seeing them again next week.”
Central Bucks West (10-1, 8-1 SOL) will host Pennsbury on Thursday (7p.m.), and Central Bucks East (4-5 SOL) will travel to Neshaminy on Thursday.
