In a battle of SOL heavyweights, Cailey Lever deflected a corner shot by Riley Donnelly into the cage, giving the visiting Patriots a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the contest. That lead held the rest of the way.
“I feel like the girls on the team are starting to work together,” East coach Michelle Finegan said. “We’re really working on communicating on the field, hustling and intensity, making possession passes – just a lot of the things that we normally work on, but they’re starting to execute them.
“Neshaminy is a great team with speed and fight. It was a tough game for both teams at the beginning of the year.”
For Lever, it was her fourth goal in two games, and although the Patriots scored just one goal, they had their share of opportunities in the circle, holding an advantage in both shots (18-6) and corners (18-2).
“I’m a little disappointed in the number of goals that we had when you see the number of shots,” Finegan said. “Their goalie (Maddie Tiemann) had a great game, but it was us. We were really struggling on the grass.
“I was happy to get out of it with a 1-0 win on grass. I was most pleased with our team defense.”
Anchoring the Patriots’ defensive backfield were Isobel Mannino, Mackenzie Boyle, Tara Harper and Elizabeth Philipp.
“(They) led the defense with excellent communication and decision making in the backfield,” Finegan said. “It wasn’t just those defenders, but it was the team defense overall.
“The backfield did a nice job, but the whole team recovered back quickly, got to the ball – all of the things you try to get them to do.”
Central Bucks East (2-0) will host North Penn in Wednesday’s SOL opener, and Neshaminy (1-1) is off until Friday when the Redskins will host Bensalem.
