Danielle Nelson’s goal with a Mangano assist in the fourth minute gave the Indians an early lead. CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 6, NORTH PENN 2
Mikayla Barrow connected on an unassisted goal during corner play less than nine minutes into Wednesday’s SOL opener, spotting the Knights an early 1-0 lead. The Patriots – apparently tired of their steady diet of overtime thrillers – reeled off five unanswered goals en route to the convincing win.
“Today was the first time we actually took care of business,” senior captain Reilly Finegan said.
“On the bus today, we said, ‘This is not ending in a tie. We’re not doing another overtime,’” junior Isabel Mannino said.
Tuesday’s win came 24 hours after the Patriots edged Downingtown West in overtime.
“Yesterday was definitely a huge win for us,” Riley Donnelly said. “We want to show people that it’s not just a win here and there or an upset, but it’s consistent because we have that ability.”
North Penn’s 1-0 lead held up for all of two minutes and eight seconds as freshman Emma Donnelly answered with the equalizer, using an assist from sister Riley Donnelly on a corner. Twenty-six seconds later, Emma Donnelly found the cage again, this time with an Abbey Butler assist.
Unassisted goals by Whitney Dietz and Lindsey Adriaansen in the final 10:22 of the half sent the Patriots into halftime with a commanding 4-1 lead.
“It felt like we could put people in the game and kept our depth,” coach Michelle Finegan said. “We were a little tired coming off of yesterday and having a tough game.
“Being able to bring people off the bench and keep the same momentum I thought was really healthy for our team. Some of the players that hadn’t gotten a lot of time got in today and really performed well.”
East led 5-1 after Cailey Lever scored in the opening minutes of the second half (Allison Herbine assist). Barrow (Bri O’Donnell assist) scored on a corner shot to make it a 5-2 game, but Reilly Finegan’s unassisted goal with eight minutes remaining gave the Patriots their final margin of victory.
“The biggest thing I was pleased with was the amount of time that the players jumped to the ball,” coach Finegan said. “We pressured the ball consistently and were able to work as a team on defense.
“The effort of everybody on the team was really good.”
Emma Donnelly isn’t the only freshman in the Patriots’ lineup – freshman Elizabeth Philipp starts at defensive back.
The Patriots return their top three scorers from last season –Lever, Butler and Riley Donnelly – and have added a freshman dynamo to the mix. Emma Donnelly has four goals through the first four games. The gifted freshman made it to the National Futures Championship this past summer, putting her among the elite in the program.
Another bright spot for the Patriots has been the play of junior midfielder Mackenzie Boyle.
“She’s been dynamite,” coach Finegan said. “She’s been working really hard over the summer, and she came out really strong.”
East held a 13-5 advantage in shots. Both teams had six corners.
North Penn goalie Brynne Schoppe was credited with six saves and Anissa Gardizy had three for the Knights.
Central Bucks South (2-1, 1-0 SOL) will be on the road at Souderton on Friday for a 7 p.m. game, and North Penn (0-2, 0-1) will travel to Central Bucks West on Thursday.
Central Bucks East 4-2 6
North Penn 1-1 2
SOUDERTON 2, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 0
The Indians came up with some clutch defensive plays in the opening half, battling the visiting Titans to a scoreless halftime tie. That proved to be the difference.
“(We) played an excellent first half, but we could not finish our scoring opportunities,” South coach Pat Toner said. “We are working hard to continually improve and put together two strong halves of hockey.”
Sophomore Randi Hess deflected a Jess Gabriel shot into the cage just over five minutes into the second half, and with 10:55 remaining, sophomore Isabelle Palde iced the win when she tacked on an insurance goal.
“In the first half, we weren’t winning 50-50 balls, but in the second half, we pulled it together,” coach Nicole Bauer said. “Our goals were (winning) 50-50 balls as well as double teams and connections on passes.
“In the second half, we were connecting with passes and using space as we’ve been practicing.”
The game might well have been won in the first half when Juliana Borosow and Sarah Goodwin each delivered defensive saves.
“They were huge because it would have been 2-0 going into the half,” Bauer said.
Armed with a lead, the Indians’ defense delivered.
“Defensively, we got stronger,” Bauer said. “Our three defensive backs – Borowsow, Rachel Kagarise and Ali Casciato – really stepped up, and we had our subs in the backfield stepping up.
“I was really proud of them. It was a strong defensive effort.
The Indians’ coach also credited the performance of freshman center mid Courtney Kenah.
“I thought Courtney came up with some great tackles in the midfield to get us in transition,” Bauer said. “She’s a freshman, and I just kind of threw her into the position because she’s very talented.
“I think our biggest weakness so far has been getting the ball in the circle and just getting shots off and being scrappy. We can connect, but it’s getting it into the circle that’s hard for us.”
Both teams had 13 shots on goal. South goalie Francine Richick was credited with 10 saves.
Souderton (1-1, 1-0 SOL) will host Central Bucks East on Friday, and Central Bucks South (0-1-1, 0-1) will host Pennridge on Thursday at War Memorial Field at 7 p.m.
Central Bucks South 0-0 0
Souderton 0-2 2
CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 2, WILLIAM TENNENT 0
The Bucks took plenty of shots – 21 in the first half and 20 more in the second with 30 of those shots on goal, but Tennent goalie Trish McCoy turned away 28 of them.
“(West) arrived with a strong offensive presence, forcing the Lady Panthers to concentrate strictly on defense,” Tennent coach Kaitlyn Rauchut said. “Tennent was able to maintain an enduring front and control the score.
“Despite the score, Tennent showed up with heart, hustle and the power of perseverance.”
The Bucks got on the scoreboard 65 seconds into the game when Dani Dundas connected on a goal that proved to be the game winner, using a Bryn Boylan assist. At the 20:10 mark of the second half, Bridget Naylor (Cadera Smith assist) scored after a scuffle in front of the cage. It was Naylor’s first varsity goal.
Central Bucks West (2-0, 1-0 SOL) will host North Penn on Thursday, and William Tennent (0-2, 0-1) will travel to Lansdale Catholic for a non-league contest on Friday.

WISSAHICKON 6, QUAKERTOWN 0
The Trojans were impressive in their SOL opener, racing to a 3-0 halftime lead on their way to the shutout win.
“It was a great way to start league play,” coach Leah Angstadt said. “We were able to move the ball and create many scoring opportunities in the attacking circle.”
Ellen Kane’s unassisted goal put the Trojans on the scoreboard, and by halftime, Emily Purnell and Julianna Sutow also had found the back of the cage – both with assists from Jess Waite.
“Jess Waite had an outstanding game,” Angstadt said. “She was part of every single scoring opportunity and really helped her teammates find the back of the net.”
In the second half, Caroline Testa, Grace Ball (Kane assist) and Hannah Havrilla (Waite assist) each added a goal for the 6-0 final.
The Trojans took 20 shots and earned 13 penalty corners.

PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 1, UPPER MORELAND 0
Jess Dixon scored an unassisted goal midway through the second half of Tuesday’s SOL opener, and that 1-0 lead stood the rest of the way as the Colonials eked out the win.
“PW played a hard-fought game against a tough Upper Moreland defense,” coach Charise Halteman said. “We had a lot of attacking opportunities but couldn’t seem to find the back of the net early in the game.
“Jess Dixon was finally able to put one away late in the second half after a scrum in the circle.”
Halteman credited defenders Sami Mangine, Kolby Bechtel and Frankie O’Brien for their solid play in the defensive circle, limiting Upper Moreland’s chances.

Just over a minute later, Grodsky connected for her second goal, this time using a Molly Lunney assist, and the Cardinals were just getting started. Goals by Emma Mead (Grodsky assist), Lunney, Marlee Siegel, Elizabeth Barber and Lauren Greene sent the Cards into halftime with a 7-0 lead.
In the second half, Grodsky tacked on a pair of goals – the first with a Lauren Greene assist. A goal by Allie DeMichele (Barber assist) closed out the scoring.
