SOL Football Notebook (2018 in Review)

Scott Huff’s final football notebook recaps the 2018 season and includes the SOL’s offensive leaders.

And the beat goes on…

The final chapter in the 2018 Suburban One League football season was written last week when Upper Dublin was jettisoned from the PIAA 5-A state semifinals in a loss to Manheim Central.

The Flying Cardinals finished the season with a terrific 12-2 record that included both a 5-A District One championship and a Suburban One American Conference title.

North Penn (13-1) finished the season with just a single loss to Coatesville in the PIAA 6-A District One championship game.  The Knights earned a Suburban One League Continental Conference title going 6-0 in the conference.

Harry S Truman (10-2) and Neshaminy (8-4) were co-champions in the Suburban One League National Conference – both earned District One 6-A playoff bids.  The Tigers defeated Council Rock South in a first-round game but fell in a second-round game, while Neshaminy fell to North Penn in a first-round contest.

The SOL National also saw Council Rock South (6-5) and Pennsbury (5-6) also earn playoff invitations.  The Golden Hawks lost to Truman in a first-round game, while the Falcons were shown the playoff door by Garnet Valley in an opening round contest.

The SOL Continental – in addition to North Penn – was represented by Central Bucks East (6-5).  The Patriots were defeated by District One champion Coatesville in a first-round contest.

The SOL American saw Quakertown (9-4) win a game on the 6-A level over Perkiomen Valley, but the Panthers dropped a second-round game to Garnet Valley.

The SOL American also saw a pair of teams advance to a second-round 5-A district game when Upper Dublin defeated Cheltenham (8-4).

Springfield (6-4) played an independent schedule and earned an invite to the PIAA District One 4-A playoffs.  The Spartans concluded their season with a first-round loss.

Just sayin’

St. Joseph’s Prep won its fourth PIAA 6-A state football championship in the last six years, thanks to its 40-20 win over Harrisburg on Saturday.  SJP has won state football titles in 2013, 2014, 2016 and lost last season – and on Saturday night added 2018.

St. Joe Prep is a “non-boundary school” (private) that competes for the PIAA state title against teams that are labeled “boundary schools” (public – which includes the entire Suburban One League).

Do the terms ‘recruiting’ and ‘transfer’ ring a bell?

Just sayin’

There has been a disproportionate number of “non-boundary” schools collecting state titles in all sports – a situation that has created some animosity among the public schools throughout the state.

Just sayin’

The simple solution to this conundrum (great word for problem) is to have both a ‘non-boundary” and “boundary” champion on all classifications in Pennsylvania.

Just sayin’

But the PIAA points a finger at the state legislators for a solution to the problem, and the state legislators point a finger right back at the PIAA.

Just sayin’

And nothing gets done.

Just sayin’
