Central Bucks South head coach Tom Hetrick is an extremely successful scholastic football coach for most of the week, but on Saturday afternoon he becomes a rabid Notre Dame University football fan.
And the CBS coach turned ND fanatic does so for an exceptionally good reason.
Coach Hetrick’s first season as head coach of the Titans was the senior high school season for superlative running back Josh Adams – the current Fighting Irish junior/captain.
“Every Saturday we gather around the television to watch Josh,” said Hetrick of his family. “We have gotten to see him play in person three or four times, and it is great to be able to see him play at that level.
“Josh is still the same quality kid now that I got to know when he was a sophomore at South,” added Hetrick. “You can’t help but root hard for him.”
Hetrick now guides a talented 2017 CB South team that has been equally impressive in the first two weeks of the season. The Titans (2-0) opened the non-conference season with an exciting 38-6 victory over Abington (1-1) and followed with a convincing 35-7 win over Council Rock North (1-1).
“So far, so good,” simply stated Hetrick. “We have set goals of winning the Central Bucks Cup (with wins needed over rivals CB West and CB East), winning our conference (the SOL Continental Conference that features North Penn, Pennridge, CB West, CB East, Souderton, and William Tennent), and playing deep into districts.”
CB South – a District One qualifier last season – returned a pair of extraordinary players – one on both sides of the football in junior linebacker Matt Norris and junior running back Jake Layer. The good news is that Norris had been spectacular as an inside linebacker – the bad news is that Layer was lost for the season with a torn ACL.
“Matt is playing behind a terrific defensive line and has been lights out with around 11 tackles in each of the first two games,” said Hetrick. “We miss Jake. But (senior) Ryan Watson, (junior) Tom McLauglin, and (junior) Connor DiLissio have stepped up and done a great job.”
Watson – who is also a standout cornerback for the Titans – has put up some impressive rushing stats, averaging 10.6 yards per carry to go along with an SOL high five rushing touchdowns.
“Council Rock South (1-1) is going to be a good test this week us as we get ready to go into our conference schedule,” said Hetrick of the SOL National Conference opponent. “We know that if we play good football – we are just going to be average in our league. We have to play great football if we even want to be good in our league
“And we have the non-league game with Neshaminy (2-0) in the middle of a tough conference schedule,” added Hetrick in reference to the October 6th meeting with the district power Redskins. “But we want show that we are able to compete with the best teams in the area.”
