Scott Huff’s first football notebook of the school year previews Friday’s William Tennent/Truman game and predicts the winners for all the SOL contests. The notebook also includes the SOL’s stat leaders.

And the beat goes on…
There have been the ‘gold standard’ programs for decades in the Suburban One League.
North Penn, Neshaminy, Pennsbury, Pennridge come to mind quickly to the veteran observers of the SOL. Quakertown, Upper Dublin, Plymouth Whitemarsh, and Abington have all had their day – so has Upper Moreland in more recent days – and so has Central Bucks West waaaaaaay back in a day.
Harry S Truman wants very much to put its name among the elite programs in the area, and the Tigers will go after their third straight impressive win against William Tennent. The Tigers have devoured by Methacton (47-0) and Avon Grove (46-12) in their first pair of games.
William Tennent, who lost a heartbreaker last week to Bensalem (22-19), ended a 27-game losing streak with a 21-14 victory over Upper Moreland in their season opener. It was the first win for new head coach Richard Clemens.
Last year Truman (7-4 overall) defeated Tennent (0-11) by a resounding 41-0 score.
“I’m sure they are going to be ready for us,” said Truman head coach Mike LaPalombana. “There are a few teams we beat last year that are going to be fired up to play us this year.
“I saw (Tennent) against Bensalem and was impressed with the size they have up front,” added LaPalombana. “That game went back and forth with either team having a chance to win – and they opened the season with a nice win.
“We took over the program last year, and we had a nice season,” continued the Tigers’ coach. “We have an excellent coaching staff (that includes former Pennsbury head coach Galen Snyder), and the kids have worked hard to get ready for the season.”
“Truman is a quality team,” said William Tennent head coach Richard Clemens. “They run the Wing-T and have some real playmakers on offense – and they get after the quarterback on defense.
“That coaching staff has instilled discipline and a great system,” added Clemens. “Truman is a playoff team.
“We have a young team that has responded very well to us this year,” continued Clemens. “Everyone wanted to mention the losing streak before the season, and now everyone wants to mention the Truman score from last year.
“The one thing that I love about this team is that effort has not been a problem,” added Clemens. “The kids come to work hard every day,”
The final non-league schedule ends for both Truman and Tennent with this contest – and it is a contest that is important to both programs.
