QUAKERTOWN 49, NORRISTOWN 7
By Scott Huff
Quakertown– The Panthers opened the season with four convincing victories that showcased a devastating rushing attack that has featured seniors Rob Burns and Nick Bonomo – and rarely got to page 2 of the playbook. In those four wins – Q-town outscored opponents by a staggering 177-32 margin.
Quakertown (5-0, 2-0) gave fans a sneak peak at the potent passing game as the Panthers ‘mercy-ruled’ Norristown (2-3, 0-2) 49-7 at Alumni Field in a game played in the biting cold and a steady rain.
“We are already in week five – and we have to show that we are able to throw the ball at some point,” said Quakertown head coach George Banas. “Tonight wasn’t a great night to throw the ball – but I thought we were able to make some plays with the passing game.”
Senior quarterback Tom Garlick did not have incredible numbers with a meager five completions for 75 yards – but he did fire a pair of touchdown passes to senior Kyle Baskin.
“My comfort zone is throwing the ball – that’s what I love to do,” said Garlick. “But our goal is to put the ball into the end zone – and I am not going to complain.
“We work as a team,” added Garlick. “We have good running backs, a good offensive line, and good receivers.”
The good offensive line opened up gaping holes for the good running backs all night. When the final whistle sounded to end the game – Quakertown rushed for 302 yards and five touchdowns.
“Burns and Bonomo are a great counter punch backfield,” said Banas as the duo accounted for 208 yards and three touchdowns. “They each get their share of carries – and they each block very well for each other.”
“Quakertown is a very good team – you aren’t 5-0 for nothing,” said Norristown head coach Jason Powel. “But we made some mistakes early in the game – and when you do that against a good team they can bury you.”
The burial started in the first quarter.
Quakertown took the opening kickoff and turned the ball over on downs on the 16-yard line. However, on the first Norristown play from scrimmage the Eagles fumbled and junior Noah Wood recovered.
Garlick scored on a gorgeous 16-yard bootleg on the first snap after the turnover – and Anthony Soriano added the point after touchdown to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead.
After the ensuing kickoff – Norristown fumbled on its second snap from scrimmage – and Wood again recovered for Q-town.
Bonomo would culminate the three-play scoring drive with an 18-yard burst. A bad snap – and failed run for the 2-point conversion – kept the score at 13-0.
The highlight on the night for Norristown was its next drive. The Eagles covered 77-yards on six plays as senior Khalif Sinclair fired a 32-yard scoring pass to senior Derik Cross, Jr. Shane Hammer booted the PAT to cut the lead at the end of the first quarter to 13-7.
“We gave them some short fields – but we answered them in the first quarter with that touchdown,” said Powel. “But we didn’t do enough things the rest of the game.”
Quakertown scored a pair of touchdowns in the second period to assume a 27-7 halftime lead. Garlick located Baskin for an eight-yard touchdown pass – and Garlick fired a 30-yard touchdown pass to Baskin to close out the first half scoring. Soriano was perfect on both placements.
The Panthers blocked a punt midway through the third period that was recovered on the Eagle four-yard line. Burns scored the first of his two touchdowns on a four-yard run – and Soriano added the PAT. Burns scored his second touchdown of the period with a 33-yard burst – and Burns sent the game into the ‘mercy-rule’ with a two-point conversion and a 42-7 Q-town lead.
The final score of the game came in the fourth period when Quakertown’s Jared Kishbaugh darted 31 yards for a touchdown – and Gabby Sullivan added the point after touchdown to make the score final at 49-7.
“We really believe that the team comes first,” said Banas. “Our end goal is what the team does – not what we do individually.
“We really feel that we are a family,” added Banas. “And we will do what we have to do to win games.”
Even if it hasn’t required the Panthers to go deep into their playbook.

COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 32, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 26 (2 OT)
On a night that featured one lopsided score after another in the SOL, the Patriots and Golden Hawks found themselves locked in a classic battle. It took a pair of overtimes to determine a winner, and it was Brandon Patterson scoring the game-winning touchdown after the Patriots came up just short on their second attempt.
There was nothing to suggest the game would come down to the wire when the Golden Hawks scored on each of their first three possession. It was Kyle Hickey putting the Hawks on the board with a 42-yard TD run, but the Patriots had an answer as Alex Gibson took it in from four yards out to knot the score 6-6 after one quarter.
Hickey’s second touchdown – this one for 18 yards – put the Hawks on top 12-6, and when Mike Stock scored from nine yards out, the Hawks led 18-6 heading into the intermission.
It was still an 18-6 game at the end of the three quarters, but the Patriots battled back. Jack Lamb took it in from one yard out. It was an 18-18 game when – with less than three minutes left – Gibson scored on a seven-yard run. The PAT kick for the lead failed, setting the stage for overtime.
In the first OT, Patterson and Lamb exchanged touchdowns, and both teams converted their two-point conversions.
Council Rock South (3-2, 2-0 SOL) will host Central Bucks West next Friday, and Central Bucks East (3-2, 0-2) will host William Tennent next Saturday.

NORTH PENN 46, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 20
The Knights – without senior standout Nyfease West (injury) – raced to a 26-0 lead and then fought off a gutsy Titan squad.
If there was a defining moment in the game, it came in the third quarter after the Titans – capitalizing on a 31-yard punt return by Tyler Watson and a scoring drive that was capped by Sam Thompson’s 10-yard TD run – made it a 26-14 game.
The Knights had an immediate and definitive answer when Justin Ostopowicz, who led the Knights with 130 yards on the ground, set up his own three-yard TD run with a 55-yard burst. Ostopowicz’s touchdown put the Knights on top 33-14.
The Titans didn’t go down quietly, and Thompson took it in from eight yards out to make it a 33-20 game late in the third quarter. Again, the Knights responded – this time with Dontae Stewart scoring on a two-yard run 31 seconds into the fourth quarter to put the Knights on top 39-20, sealing the Titans’ fate.
The Knights early-game blitz was highlighted by an opening drive that was capped by an Ostopowicz five-yard touchdown run. Sophomore Kelly McNamara made history when she kicked the extra point and became the first female to score a point for North Penn football.
On the final play of the first quarter, Stewart returned an interception 16 yards for a touchdown and a 13-0 North Penn lead. Nick Isabella’s six-yard touchdown run upped that lead 19-6, and when the Titans fumbled the ensuing kickoff, the Knights regained possession and converted the short field into a touchdown and a 26-0 lead.
Late in the opening half, CB South capitalized on a North Penn fumble, cashing in on a Nate Norris touchdown run to make it a 26-6 game at halftime. Norris led the Titans' offense with 84 yards on 15 carries.
North Penn's defense limited the Titans to 190 yards of total offense. It is the second time in as many conference games the Knights have allowed less than 200 yards of total offense.
North Penn (3-2, 2-0 SOL) will host Souderton next Friday, and Central Bucks South (2-3, 1-1) will host Neshaminy.

CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 27, HARRY S TRUMAN 0
The Bucks won their second game in as many conference outings, shutting out a shorthanded Tiger squad. The Tigers lost senior quarterback Mark Lopez-Schefcyk to a torn ACL and then watched his backup, Jordan Freeman, suffer an injury, leaving the job to Lucas Gray. Making matters worse, the Tigers saw running back Justin Fant sidelined with an ankle injury in the second quarter.
West scored the only touchdown of the first half, and that came on a one-yard run by quarterback Eddie Shields to send the Bucks into halftime with a 6-0 lead. A two-yard touchdown run by Jake Reichwein and the successful two-point conversion gave the Bucks a 14-0 lead. They upped that lead to 21-0 late in the third quarter after an eight-yard TD run by Reichwein. Reichwein capped a big night with his third TD – this one a 29-yard run.
Central Bucks West (2-3, 2-0 SOL) will travel to Council Rock South, and Truman (2-3, 0-2) will travel to Quakertown.

HATBORO-HORSHAM 30, UPPER MERION 6
The Hatters improved to 2-0 in conference play with their convincing win over the visiting Vikings. Kingsley Nworu scored a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Hatters.
The Hatters led 6-0 after one quarter and took a 13-0 lead after quarterback Casey Walsh – who put his name in the school record books for career passing yards one week earlier – took it in from nine yards out. They took that 13-0 lead into halftime.
A seven-yard touchdown run by Nworu put the Hatters on top 20-0, and their lead grew to 23-0 after a field goal before the Vikings got on the scoreboard with a long TD pass. A five-yard Nworu touchdown gave the Hatters their final margin of victory.
Hatboro-Horsham (2-3, 2-0 SOL) will host Springfield, and Upper Merion (2-3, 0-2) will travel to Cheltenham.

SOUDERTON 48, BENSALEM 0
The Indians seized control of Friday’s game from the outset, opening up a 27-0 lead after one quarter on their way to the lopsided win.
Jamar White put up a game’s worth of stats in the first quarter, crossing the goal line for four touchdowns in the opening frame alone. He set the tone for a brilliant performance when – on his first carry of the night – he took it in from 82 yards out. He followed that with a six-yard touchdown run and then hauled in a Joey Curotto 22-yard touchdown pass to put the Indians on top 21-0. He tacked on his fourth TD to close out the quarter.
In the second quarter, Blake Gular had his first of two touchdown runs – this one from eight yards to put the Indians on top 34-0. They took that lead into halftime. West had 135 yards in the half and Gular, 96.
Gular’s second TD run in the third quarter put the mercy rule into effect as the Indians rolled to the win.
Souderton (3-2, 1-1 SOL) will travel to North Penn next Friday, and Bensalem (0-5, 0-2) will host Pennsbury.

UPPER MORELAND 28, CHELTENHAM 6
The Golden Bears bounced back from last week’s loss to Hatboro-Horsham to even their SOL mark with a win over the Panthers.
Rodney Morgan’s touchdown run gave the Golden Bears a 7-0 lead, but the Panthers answered with a score of their own to make it a 7-6 game. It would be the Panthers last hurrah.
By halftime, the Golden Bears led 21-6, and Morgan – who finished with 171 yards – had already surpassed 100 yards on the ground. A 13-yard touchdown run by Nick DeLucas put the Golden Bears on top 28-6 in the third quarter. Neither team scored the rest of the way.
Upper Moreland (4-1, 1-1 SOL) will travel to Plymouth Whitemarsh next Friday, and Cheltenham (1-4, 0-2) will host Upper Merion.
PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 50, WISSAHICKON 18
PW appears to be on a collision course with Upper Dublin in the battle for American Conference supremacy. The Colonials rolled to their fifth win without a loss, opening up a 20-6 halftime lead on their way to the convincing win. In their two most recent games, the Colonials have put up 92 points.
The Trojans kept it close for a while, trailing 6-0 after one quarter. When Jake Winterbottom took it in from three yards out, the Colonials led 14-0. Nafeese Nasir – who entered the game with 755 yards rushing – scored on a six-yard run to give PW a 20-0 lead.
Wissahickon broke the Colonials’ run when quarterback Mike Marino delivered a touchdown pass to Bryan Haire, and PW went into halftime with a 20-6 lead.
The Colonials went on to open up a 43-6 lead, putting the mercy rule into effect. The Trojans scored a pair of fourth quarter TDs.
Plymouth Whitemarsh (5-0, 2-0 SOL) will host Upper Moreland next Friday, and Wissahickon (1-4, 0-2) will travel to Upper Dublin.
UPPER DUBLIN 62, SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP 0
The Flying Cardinals’ offense was unstoppable, and their defense pitched a shutout at the Spartans.
Kaleif Lee put the Cardinals on the scoreboard with a five-yard touchdown run at the 8:24 mark of the opening quarter. Todd Spirt converted the first of eight extra points to make it a 7-0 game, and the floodgates were open. By the end of the first quarter, the Flying Cardinals led 28-0 – a dazzling offensive spurt that featured three touchdown runs by Stacey Gardner – for 15, 46 and 49 yards.
The Cardinals tacked on 20 more points in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 48-0 lead. Lee picked up his second touchdown run of the night, this one on a 23-yard run. Jack Rapine contributed a 56-yard interception return for a touchdown, and Phil Butler took it in from 12 yards out.
For good measure, the Cardinals tacked on a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter with Malik Bootman scoriing from four yards out and Nick Sonetto closing out the scoring with a three-yard TD run.
